This is probably my 3rd or 4th book on the steel square over the years.Overshadowing all is the deep value of this tool... learning about the steel square can lean one closer to, almost a philosophical, certainly, the historical anchors of this tool.This relatively new book is very useful.If you typically reach for the calculator when working out stairs, rafters and other geometric situations, try working it out with a square.Both methods support each other.Through each chapter, I saw practical methods explained how to do very ‘un-square’ things.Like looking at a square rigged ship, applying ohm’s law, or seven semi loads turning into a massive mobile crane, I’m left amazed pondering, “who worked all this out?”

Incredibly useful book. It provides a thorough examination of the workings of most of the commonly-encountered squares, and focuses most of the how-to on the rafter square and speed square. The rafter square in particular is an essential tool for any line of work, and is usually very affordable. I am a professional draftsman at a metalworking shop, and I use one for measuring and laying out everything from cones to stairs. At home, I do woodworking and several other hobby/trade activities, and it serves just as well there. With each how-to section, the book briefly covers the math behind the same task. In most cases, if you can read a rafter square, the square does the math for you, but it is important to know why. Armed with a rafter square and some trigonometry, there isn't much you can't do. There isn't much to complain about with this book. The history was interesting, though perhaps a bit more detailed than it needed to be. The book does cover some metalworking uses of the rafter square, but as the text indicates, a book to cover everything that can be done with the tool would be a daunting undertaking to say the least. Perhaps it is a good thing that the author held some back. If you really belong in your field, you should be able to fill in the gaps. If you're going to own a square or two (you should), you should get this book, even if you already know a lot about squares. Every tradesman/professional/hobbyist needs their own library, and this should be on one of the shelves.

There is a lot of little known information on the steel square. I've been in the building trades my whole working life, using the steel square very often, and I learned a few new tricks. Very good book, must read.

I bought this for myself and another copy for a friend of similar nerdiness. I'm not so much a proponent of the steel square as I am interested in the historical aspects of tools, especially old (meaning invented a long time ago) tools, the bodies of knowledge that went with them, and the minds of the people who figured out how to do amazing things with simple tools like the square. I'd read little bits of information about the special capabilities of the steel square, but this compendium brings them all(?) together and has historical information to boot. I really like and identify with the author, visiting the place where the first modern steel square was developed and produced. His obvious delight in road trips to obscure places, in looking around corners and behind walls in small towns to find bits of obscure history hiding in our collective past, makes me grin ear to ear, and makes him a man to my heart. I wish I could meet him, and I wish him as many adventures of discovery as he can fit in between now and our inevitable end. I'm so glad he took the time to write this book, and pack so much knowledge and interesting history into one place. Thanks!

Ordered this by mistake and glad I did. It thoroughly covers the carpenter’s and speed squares in a clear and useful way. There is very little fluff. The math is simple and useable. I thought I knew how to use a square – Nope.

This book was a $2.99 Kindle download so I didn't have very high expectations regarding this book. I was pleasantly surprised. The twist on this novel is pretty interesting - a teacher and a student. Yes, seems weird, but somehow the author makes it work well. Great read.

3.5 starsSo this is The Blue Lagoon meets Robinson Crusoe.... the slightly campy, totally heartwarming, surprisingly engrossing and not-creepy-at-all student/teacher edition. [warning: some detail spoilers related to the implausibilities are ahead]Love the new twist on old stories I love! The novel is set in the summer of 2001. Reality is Chicago, Illinois. The uninhabited (fantasy) island is somewhere in the Maldives. T.J. Callahan is 16 going on 17 and in remission from his cancer ordeal (Hodgkin's Lymphoma). His family plans a remote, tropical island vacation but also wants him to catch up on his school work without distraction. So they hire a (lovely) 30 yr old high school English teacher, Anna Emerson, to be his tutor for the summer. Yeah, that's not going to be a distraction for a teenage boy, lol. T.J. is underweight-skinny with braces and no sign of a romantic lead there. Anna, who wants marriage and a family, is distracted by the static state of her long-term relationship with stupid John. Some delay causes Anna and T.J. to catch a later flight alone and the cheeseburger-loving pilot they fly with crashes the plane when a heart attack ensues. And here we go...I wasn't really sure how to rate this one. Technically, I shouldn't rate it more than 2-3 stars for all the ridiculous implausibilities that go down on the island, lol. Far-fetched coincidences bring in everything they need right at the right moment (after just the right amount of suffering)-- suitcases with ridiculous amounts of hygiene products (who packs 3 deodorants for a summer job??? lol). Shoes. Hooks. Chickens. Cure-all mini first aid kit. Guardian angel type dolphins. What? The author wanted her deserted-on-a-tropical-island-fantasy without giving up any of the modern hygienic conveniences, ha ha. This actually made me laugh because that's my attitude about camping these days. But, okay. It's a romance and I let these things slide.By the middle of the story things just started feeling repetitive and you could feel the plot cycle of obstacles on the island repeating itself. The mini chapters that alternated between T.J. and Anna were basically the same voice. And Anna is a teacher/tutor in name only... we never see her at work as a teacher and she doesn't really behave like one or teach T.J. anything. What I remember about her most is that she wants to be a wife and a mother. The author didn't really wanna get racy or irresponsible with the age-gap or student/teacher dynamics... they basically seem like friends and equals after the opening, and consequences for the taboo do come into play.Really. It's high fantasy romance chick lit and seriously not a masterpiece of writing skill or research. At all. And that's typical for the genre. And yet this novel drew me in with the unusual premise and managed to be unputdownable despite everything. It's emotionally charged. This writer has a powerful innate emotional landscape in her writing voice that just subtly and warmly and honestly welcomes you in and encourages you to get lost in her fantasy. The magic is in her writing voice, imo. She also did a good job of developing T.J. from young teen to young man. But it also didn't end when I thought it would, which reinvigorated the story for me after feeling it was getting repetitive. The last third of the book was the most surprising and realistic part of the story for me as fantasy turned to reality... and we weren't slapped with instant, implausible happily-ever-afters. This author is fabulous with the build up and the build down, you might say. Somehow I closed the book believing all of that had happened despite everything... crazy, lol...Highly enjoyable. A page-turner. But it is a high fantasy romance, so ya just have to go with it and let the implausibilities slide in order to be swept away.Note: There is sex here but none of it is underage (the author is careful to state maybe 143 times how old T.J. is when things get romantic, lol). Most of the sex was brief and not graphic at all. All of it is tastefully done. This is not erotica. It's a story about relationships and emotions. I would even put this one in the New Adult category. It's fairly sweet and innocent and YA-ish on the whole.

Somehow, for some tragic reason, this book has more stars on Good Reads than The Great Gatsby. That's a travesty. Having said that, so is this book. This book should be taught in literature classes on what NOT to do because it's so formulaic. I was amazed at how (spoiler alert) conveniently everything they needed to survive washed up on shore just a few days after they crashed On the Island (hey, look at that!). This book is great for when you're depressed and want to escape. Graves does do a good job of telling the story and the writing is simple so you can cruise right through it. Sex, drama, beaches, aqua water, and both raging hormones and storms. This is one book you CAN judge by it's cover. Middle class white lady has big scary problem but toughs it out and...well, guess. You'll probly get it right. I say go for it, on vacation.

Saw a teaser on FB for this title and was intrigued. Such a sweet love story - not normally my thing - that I found engaging, entertaining and a read that will appeal to a large and diverse audience.Plenty of older men younger women stories about so the older woman in this story (by 13 years) and younger man appealed to me.Could tell time was spent on editing and minor formatting errors not enough to take me out of story.

After reading a particular negative review, I found myself intrigued by this book so I bought it. I'm glad I did. I think what people are failing to realize here is that this is a work of fiction and the author has artistic license to include whatever she wants into it. Were some of the supplies they ended up realistic? Probably not but that didn't make the important issues like malnutrition, sharks, jellyfish, blazing sun, any less significant. Those things were just fillers. Once you get past the minute details, you appreciate what the couple had to endure together for over three years. Should the fact that the young man was 13 years younger have made any difference? No because nothing happened until he was a consenting adult. If you thought you were going to die on an island together, I'm sure that you'd want to cling to the person with you. I enjoyed the book and couldn't put it down.

Yes I finally got to this book. Hearing about it these past few years, I just knew I had to dig it out of the tbr pile on my Kindle and give it a go. I am thrilled I did. And kind of want to slap myself for waiting so long since it was truly a beautiful read.The author's writing is flawless in my opinion. The words flow easily and her writing style is simple. And I don't mean that it's subpar or lacking in any way. I just mean that she doesn't waste time with unnecessary words or scenes. She gives us exactly the right amount of emotion, dialogue and backdrop. I felt as I was on that island stranded right along with TJ and Anna, the descriptions so vivid and well-researched. Every small victory at creating shelter or finding food, to the dire medical situations that kept them vigilant, I felt each and every one of those scenarios like I was there myself.Anna and TJ's love, although expected, never felt forced, pathetic or desperate. Even though they didn't know their fate, I really believe they fell for each other for the right reasons and I give the author huge kudos for making their love official when TJ was of age.Overall this is a story of survival. Not just from a horrific plane crash leaving TJ and Anna cut off from the rest of the world. But to survive in a universe where others may not understand your relationship nor your desire to be together. Especially when you aren't 100 percent sure yourself.This was an absolutely lovely read that everyone needs to discover. Simply wonderful in every way.A huge 5+ stars.
