A few years ago, I searched for a kids' cookbook that I could love and that my kids could enjoy and follow easily. I was so surprised by the variety of cookbooks and the poorly written directions they included. In particular, I remember looking at Paula Deen's cookbook for children. The small print, light type, and colored background... I wanted a better cookbook for my kids! For me, cookbooks are inspiring (even if I almost never follow a recipe exactly)! I ended up finding one that I loved-- Kids Cook!, a Williamson Kids Can book that is now back in print. But, there are no photographs in the cookbook. My kids love color and they are not drawn to that cookbook. On the other hand, a new cookbook arrived at our doorstep last week and my kids hovered over it--drinking in the recipes, excited to cook!That cookbook is Cooking Class by Deanna F. Cook. A few years ago, Storey published two cookbooks for kids about sewing that I like: Sewing School and Sewing School 2. With this cookbook for kids, Storey followed the same format and editing style--which I loved back then and love again with this new cookbook.Cooking Class is divided into seven sections that cover the basics, meals, snacks, and of course--dessert! The Basics section is what I have found lacking in most kids' cookbooks, but in this one, it is done well. Good tips, good pictures, and even a page on how to clean up! I like that they added two pages on how to fold a fancy napkins and setting the table. I have a feeling that our next holiday meal will have some beautifully folded napkins!From there, the recipe sections begin. The recipes are divided into 1, 2, or 3 spoons. 1 spoon recipes can be made by kids themselves. 2 spoon recipes might need an older sibling or parent's help. 3 spoon recipes use sharp knives and the oven/stove, so an adult is most likely needed for kids under 10 or 11. My daughters are 9 and 11 and are uncomfortable with the oven and can turn on the gas stove, but usually prefer me to do that.The recipes are easy to follow and have great pictures which give clear instructions. The reading level (because of the size of the type) is probably 3rd grade and above. I know that my first grade son can read most of the words in these directions, but the size of the type would be a stumbling block for him.Our first recipe we tried from the cookbook was the grab and go granola bars. I was a little skeptical about how my kids would like them since they aren't baked, but my whole family ended up loving them! I think next time, though, I am going to try and mix the chocolate chips into the mixture and then press into the pan so that the chocolate chips are mixed throughout the bars and aren't just on top.I suspect that within a few months every recipe in this cookbook will have been tried by my kids!Aside from the recipes, the cookbook includes some fun stickers, place cards, and conversation questions for the dinner table. These are of high quality and my kids have enjoyed them all.I think you get the idea... when choosing a great kids' cookbook, this one tops my list! (and has been added to my list of favorite cookbooks.)Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this cookbook for review from Storey publishing.

After window shopping several children's cookbooks on Amazon I decided on the Cooking Class cookbook for my daughter's birthday. My daughter (6yo) has been telling me she wants to learn to cook like me. This cookbook is perfect. It's even spiral bound! There are tons of colorful photographs which I even like in my adult cookbooks. There's step by step instructions making it perfect for teaching children. And I have to mention the placecards and stickers included in the back! I would highly recommend this.

This book is so easy to follow it makes me look like the best mom ever! I don't know what I ever did without it! Seriously! Awesome book if you want to teach your kids how to cook. Wonderful homeschool resource.

This is a great and fun cookbook! My 8 year old was so excited to have her very own first cookbook, and she right away went to work cooking. The first recipe she made was the tortilla chips using soft tortillas. It's a great starter cookbook with great photos and descriptions and instruction.

This was purchased as a present. Before the party all three of my kids wanted to read through it. The two older kids (13 and 10) decided they needed to make something out of it! It has helpful information for kids newer to the kitchen. The pictures are helpful too.

I got this for my 8 year old for Christmas and she loves it. She loves looking through it and finding a recipe for us to try. Also, she's more likely to eat stuff that she normally wouldn't if she's involved in its creation :) I remember my mom getting me my first cookbook which I still have and love. I still use the banana bread recipe! Happy with this sweet cookbook.

I am very impressed with this book. The recipes are healthy and easy for kids to follow along with. Everything we have made has tasted good! I bought this for my 8 year old daughter and she loves it!

Huge hit. My 10-year-old grandson loves it and his mom says they may make this a real "class" at home! He likes to cook and I think the recipes look very kid-friendly from both the making and eating aspects. And I like the extra lessons in cleaning up, folding napkins and setting the table, etc.

Instead of a mature, insightful look at creativity and the value of art--as was my take-away from the book’s glowing description--“Art Matters” struck me as banal, sophomoric, and over-priced. It may be inspirational to a teen that has never been encouraged to pursue his or her creative interests. But it failed to move me. And what’s with “Make Good Art”? That’s pretty trite. Who’s to judge what’s “good”? If one is moved to create, then create with passion and mindfulness! Relish the process and not the results. Art does matter.

There are two reasons why you would buy this book: you’re a big Neil Gaiman fan, or you’re a huge Chris Riddell fan (Riddell illustrated the book).I follow both Gaiman and Riddell on Twitter, Gaiman because he’s an interesting person and says interesting things about writing, and Riddell because he’s such a brilliant artist and sometimes posts videos of his pencil drawing. I got caught up in the release tweets for this book and bought it because I’m passionate about art.The book is a collection of four essays Gaiman wrote between 2011 and 2015, beautifully illustrated by Riddell. Riddell and Gaiman frequently collaborate; they have a very successful working relationship.The first three essays were merely okay; they didn’t tell me anything new. I was disappointed and feared that this quick book, readable in one short sitting, was not worth my time.However, the final essay redeemed the book for me. I won’t reveal everything I liked, because I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone else; but here are three highlights:• “Something that worked for me was imagining that where I wanted to be. . . was a mountain. A distant mountain. My goal. . . And when I truly was not sure what to do, I could stop, and think about whether it was taking me towards or away from the mountain.”• “My first book—a piece of journalism I had done for the money, and which had already bought me an electric typewriter from the advance—should have been a best seller. . . I decided that I would do my best in future not to write books just for the money. . . If I did work I was proud of, and I didn’t get the money, at least I’d have the work.”• “The old rules are crumbling and nobody knows what the new rules are. So make up your own rules.”The book is worth visiting your local library for.

This little book is a wonderful collection of great illustrations and wisdom. I’ll enjoy reading it as soon as I’ve received meaning today. Inspirated I decided to use some watercolors to my favorite pages! Thank you for your art.

I read it in twenty minutes and was left uninspired and disappointed. This is four very short essays spread out into a book. The font used was one of those "handwriting" ones in all caps and hard to read. The pencil sketch illustrations took up the majority of the space on most pages. Not much content.

This is a book that you can read quickly and yet spend a lifetime thinking about. Like most of Gaiman’s work (and I’ve been following him since the Sandman days), the text in here goes much, much deeper than what’s printed on the pages. Combined with Riddell’s sketches this book is a work of art itself, and like all “good art” it is definitely worth experiencing.

Yes this book is a very quick read. Everyone is going to have a different metric for what is "worth the money" to them. Personally, I loved this book and will be buying 3 more copies.I have three kids, aged 21, 19, and 16. They are each very creative, with different artistic strengths (writing, visual art, and music, respectively). They all have dreams of doing what they love as a means to support themselves. They will each be getting a copy for Christmas this year.

This beautiful book, with illustrations, succinctly narrates the author's travails and successes. It encourages any/all would-be artists (writers, specifically, but also intimated for any artistic career) to be true to themselves at all times. It's a wonder to read as it outlines methods for commercial success with personal gratification. Every current and future writer or anyone in any other professional field should read this book. It makes you glad you read it!

A quick read with inspiring insight. The images contribute rather than distract. Familiar Gaiman pieces reimaged with Chris Riddell's gift for simple lines and whimsical images.

This book comes with a health warning because it is best described as non-con; dark erotica in the strictest sense of the word. These three stories feature abduction, cruelty, torture, and rape all inflicted upon Aaron, a character so nice and innocent, despite his rent-boy status, it breaks your heart experiencing the events mostly from his perspective.I could go into lengthy details about the sort of horrors Aaron encounters but I’ll refrain. I’m fairly sure that readers who are drawn to books like this one will have a pretty good idea what to expect. I’d much rather write about another aspect of this story, one that took my breath away. For me, if this story is anything, it is a testament to the mind’s determination to stay alive. And in order to keep its ‘owner’ safe, Aaron’s mind comes up with almost convincing constructions and lies in order to prevent him from just giving up and dying, although he does come close.The dynamic between Aaron and Vincent, the man who abducts and subsequently ‘trains’ him, is frightening due to how plausible it all is. I know there’s a good word and psychological explanation for everything I read: Stockholm Syndrome. I realise it’s not something the author has invented, but the way in which he describes the process and makes it happen on the page is stunning. Aaron’s emotional journey is vivid, real and very logical. And THAT is what makes this book such a shattering read. It is impossible not to like Aaron and fall for him, which makes having to watch his journey, as he’s slowly broken into pieces which may never slot back into their original settings, all the more heartbreaking.Hardly any character in this book is exactly who or what they appear to be when the story starts. Some who at first appear heartless and cruel will turn out to have feelings after all, and others, who at first glance seem to be nothing but bystanders suddenly turn up centre-stage. And that’s all I can say about that without resorting to spoilers.I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to read and appreciate this book. I’ve tried starting a dark series before and haven’t found the courage to go back to where I stopped reading yet. The Prisoner has me convinced that I should probably try again. This story captured me from the first page, be it in a car-crash sorta fashion. In fact I’ve one-clicked ‘Season Two’ of this series just now, because I have to know what will happen next; especially considering the bombshell the author dropped in the last few pages.To summarise: The Prisoner is a captivating read but only if you enjoy and can stomach dark erotica.

So this was interesting. Now, before I start I just want to say I’m writing this review with the belief there are no more books to this series. That this was the last we’ll hear from these characters.When we left Season One there were a million questions, a ton of loose ends, and all hope gone. Now, Season 2, each episode, brought more clarity, but it also brought more questions.We are deeply involved with Carter here, Vincent, Aaron, sure but I felt like this was more Carter’s journey (nightmare).Kol still masters the dark depravity that I have come to expect from his books. His creativity knows no bounds and taboo is too gentle a word for his tales. Major props to him for his bravery and his storytelling.I had an issue though that has nothing to do with the material of this story. For me, and this is my opinion, if this was the last book for these characters it shouldn’t be. There are still questions, a lot of loose ends, no finality, and no happy ending. Now, it’s possible the no happy ending is the intention of the author so I can’t fault anyone for that. But there’s holes.Remember, I’m writing this based on the fact I think this is the end. If it’s not than I have no doubt Kol will fill in the blanks in future books. As it stands it feels incomplete to me. Perhaps the desolate haunting feeling is supposed to be the end game of this ride. Again, if that’s the goal it’s been achieved. Lol.Some will see this as open ended and justice served. Others, like myself, may not see it that way at all. But perhaps there IS more to come. One can hope.

This stirring story took near,y three years to come to an end, but it was worth the journeyKol took me on a journey of self discovery that pushed my buttons and my limits in equal measureI can't say enough how much I enjoyed this series, and its finale is perfect and fitting to the characters that we have come to know and love in equal measureI cannot waittttt to see what Kol does next!

I have waited patiently for the final season of this series and it was well worth the wait! Aaron's story was heartbreaking and gut wrenching thru out. This is a dark, gripping and intense story of Aaron's kidnapping and what transpired and his escape. Holy hell! Kudos to Author Kol Anderson for a well written story!

Start with Things Can Only Get Feta, followed by Homer is Where the Heart Is, then A Scorpion in the Lemon Tree, and cap it off with A Saint for Summer.I am married to a Greek from a small village and have spent a good deal of time in the Mani. Marjory gives you a true portrait of the of the incredible generosity and kindness one encounters in the less traveled areas of Greece.

A Saint for Summer by Marjory McGinn is a compelling story with a cast of characters who all seem to be searching for something. Bronte, the main character, arrives in Greece to reconnect with her ailing, wayward father. She has questions. Her father has his own mystery to solve, one that has haunted him for years. Delving into his unresolved issues, draws the storyline back to the past during the Battle of Kalamata in World War II.McGinn does an excellent portrayal of Greek villagers protecting their own, capturing their spirit and honoring their traditions. It’s evident she understands the essence of these people and is well researched in the history, as well as the current crisis events.This story has a touch of several elements – humor, tragedy, mystery, history, tradition, religion, family drama, and even a little romance.

I’ve read the author's other non-fiction memoirs about her time living in Greece with her husband and their terrier Wallace. They are fun, really interesting and well-written adventures and a good picture of life in small-town Greece today. So I decided to try her work of fiction, also set in today's Greece. It features a Scottish ex-pat who's abandoned his family and "gone Greek", living more as a Greek local than a British visitor. He coaxes his estranged daughter to visit him, ostensibly for his failing health, but he really wants to employ her experience as a journalist to help him work on a project - finding more information about his father, who may have died as a British soldier in WWII during the battle of Kalamata. It's a kind of mystery / family re-connection story overlayed with Greek and Scottish culture both today and during WWII. Interesting.

The byline for A Saint for the Summer reads: A compelling story of heroism, faith and love. Yes, in the end, it is all of these things. However, it is the way that the story develops that is captivating. The characters in the story are natural and believable. The author's knowledge of and appreciation of the Greek way of life is evident in her descriptions of both setting and character. This is a captivating book that was a complete pleasure to read.

I can't remember when I derived so much pleasure from a historical novel. I've read Ms. McGinn's wonderful autobiographical books about her time in Greece and these give an element of truth when she turns her talents to writing about actual events. She expertly combines real events with fictional characters in a way that makes A Saint for Summer so enjoyablse.

A lovely book. Interesting story and characters. I had already read the author’s three books about her real adventures in Greece so I was familiar with the references she was making and saw parallels to the characters in this work of fiction. A great summer read.

This is a wonderful novel. Marjory McGinn is a very talented author. I have read all of her books and this one immediately made the summit to the top of my all time favorites list. She tells a story of life in a new and unfamiliar environment, the importance of family (particularly ancestors ), integrity , a bit of WW II history and finding romance in a foreign country. Once you read the first page you won't be able to put this book down.I found the story to be totally mesmerizing and completely enjoyable. Highly recommended !

Not what I expected at all. Wish I would have read the one-star review. I bought the book as a gift for my young niece because it says clearly on the cover A Smart Fun Book for ages 3-7. This book is NOT for CHILDREN directly, since it is explaining the exercises and offering information for ADULTS--adults that want to read the exercises out loud or create their own ideas from the book. It's also not really a yoga book. It's just a movement book. It holds many sweet ideas that are very educational about animals and contains many animal stories without illustrations! It may be a great resource for teachers (yoga or school) to get ideas, but adults must translate what they read into something engaging. I'll use it to inform my own yoga teaching, but definitely would not give this as a gift to a parent or child.

Hi - I am disappointed with this book. My mistake for buying it. It is a book for adults to read to their children. There are very few pictures or illustrations for the kids to look at and then replicate. The beautiful illustrations on the cover are deceptive - very little of the inside of the book is like the front cover. The authors appear not to have the basic knowledge that body skills are well taught to young children via pictures. Yoga is a full body experience, not a language experience of reading and temporal lobe translation.

Incredibly good read. Trying to get back into reading, picked this one up 'cause it looked interesting, and finished it in an afternoon. Some of the plot was a touch predictable, but the ride was well worth it. Enjoyable characters and some heart-pumping thrills even if you think you know how it ends. I'd recommend it to someone who enjoys the Mad Max series, or rough and gritty apocalyptic futures.

Turbocharged and frenetic, this story hits the road racing and rarely lets up on the speed. But there’s more to this than zooming around the track. At the heart of this novel is the gripping relationship between two very different women: the magnetic, beautiful racer Cassica Hayle and her stolid, hard-working and brooding tech Shiara DuCal.The novel pulses, throbs and seethes with the often contentious tension between these two. As a crucial race approaches, Shiara and Cassica find themselves drifting further apart in their desires and the reader is thoroughly caught up in their shifting dynamics. Most of the other characters are ably written in too, even supposedly shallow characters as Cassica’s surly ex-boyfriend Card or the quieter Sammis.The author adroitly lays out the various milieus the girls find themselves in: the struggling but clannish small town of Coppermouth, the blasted post-apocalyptic wastelands and the hollowed-out cities where strung-out Howlers live, et al. But the real energy lies in the car races. These are fantastic passages that place the reader squarely in the midst of the action; it’s like someone describing a rollercoaster ride so accurately you can feel your stomach drop when the cars race down from the height of the loop.This is a novel that aptly combines high-octane action with a powerful central friendship, in-depth characterization, plausible dialogue and enough car action to make NASCAR aficionados drool. Even if you’re no fan of car races, this novel grips you from the first sentence and doesn’t let go until the final page. It’s that terrific.

I picked this up at my library because I've liked Chris Wooding's books since I was a kid. His Breaking sky series is still a gem in my library.Very actively and well paced. Velocity was a good read. I'm not shy about dropping a book if it doesn't hold my attention, but I read this one straight through. It's reminiscent of Mad Max and Speed Racer squashed together with two strong girls who won't lay down and quit.

The gist of the novel is that multitudes are climbing a mountain to a monastery for the celebration of "the three hosts," an annual religious event. The year is 1666 and the setting is a village in Bavaria close to where the author actually grew up. The novel contains myriad simultaneous stories within the central story, and this is quite well done. The lead Benedictines are painted with a negative brush while little is written about the ordinary monks who comprise the majority of the community. The novel is replete with a type of sensory and visual realism, that is, the rough conditions of the time, the intertwining of Church and State, the smells of feces and floating carcasses, and so forth. Superstition and religion are difficult to separate, while there is evidence that science is beginning to present itself at the monastery. A major translation or author error relates to the improper use of the word "novitiate". This word means either a place where novices of an order live and are trained or a period of time which novices spend in special prayer and learning. The proper word for a person who is in this period of development is "novice" (L. novus = new). The novel consistently transposes novitiate for novice, an indication of superficial knowledge/bad translation of the text. In general, the novel is recommended if you can overlook mistranslation issues and Simon, the medicus, behaving out of character.

The author uses his own knowledge and serious investigation to work the bones of his story, but what makes this very good historical fiction. He presents the flavor of the 1600"s in Bavaria without holding back the sounds, flavors and odors of a bygone age, that should makes us appreciate .ore gentle justice, hand washing and food inspection more than most do. His main character has much to overcome, her husband ends up so tired he just finally falls asleep. It is interesting to read the afterwords and realize that the celebration does continue to be celebrated into our days. The word choices, one in particular, are concise.. After describing the smells of the main community near the end of the story in a few unappetizing words the doctor sums it up with "the smell of people, which I love".

The fourth installment of the "Hangman's Daughter" series finds Magdalena and her husband Simon heading to the monastery at Andechs for a religious pilgrimage. But quickly things fall apart for the two when Magdalena as well as several pilgrims fall ill and Simon must work to treat them. All is not as it seems in Andechs with several gruesome murders, a kidnapping and a possible Golem preying on the monks. Summoned by his daughter to help an old friend, Jacob Kuisl, the Schongau hangman, must unravel the mysteries that are threatening his loved ones. I love this series and this installment was wonderful. The twists and turns kept me enthralled from beginning to end. The characters are so well written I feel as if I'm sitting around a warm fire listening to the fascinating tales of old friends. I look forward to diving into "The Werewolf of Bamberg" next!

Author Oliver Potzsch gives the reader a good description of what it was like to live in seventeenth century Bavaria regarding customs and beliefs.This book presents another adventure of the Kusil family who decide to visit a relative in Andechs and attend a famous pilgrimage at the monastery.The family discovers that there is much hanky-panky going on concerning the monks other than saying Mass and giving alms. This discovery leads to some very mysterious and dangerous encounters.

Entertaining! It's not a complex mystery, but it's interesting enough to keep me well entertained for 16-1/2 hours (the length of the audio version). The plot twists from one view to another, and even though I was pretty sure I'd picked out at least one or two of the troublemakers, I was never totally sure until the end. This is the only one of this series that I have read (listened to), but I wouldn't hesitate to pick another if it becomes available as a daily deal with an inexpensive audio version to go along with it.The primary characters were appealing to me ... nice, decent, ordinary people, people I might like to meet. Having traveled to many places in Germany, I could feel the atmosphere there. I would like to have visited the (presumably fictionalized) location of this story. On the other hand, maybe I did and didn't know it! Germany is full of these wonderful, scenic sites. There are a few sad and scary scenes, but most of all, it's just a good mystery.

Not as good as previous books. The history is still good but the main characters have become less likable. Magenlina is irritating irresponsible and generally unlikable. She is constantly wining about Simon and complaining about her lot in like. In every book she finds another guy attractive. Her it's a mute.Kuisl has become boorish with his know it all attitude. He leaves his sick wife to "help" a friend who he hasn't seen in 20 years with disastrous.. consequences. During his search for Simon and his grandchildren he stops to look at books. Really!!!

It is a good book with plenty of reading assignments (bout 65 pages) to include practice of synonyms/antonyms and fill in the blanks, but I'd say all this is more for a 2nd, or even 1st, grader not 3rd. stories are way too short and too easy, so answering questions is a breeze for a 3rd grader as it isn't much info he/she have to remember or process. Because it's so short you can actually just read questions first and then find answers. I though that it would get gradually harder, but it doesn't.

As a homeschooling parent who must have been sick on the days we had grammar in school, I really appreciate this book. Fun activities and sentences. My 8 year old is really liking this book. He hasn't given me any pushback on doing pages from it. Some of the sentences aren't the most creative, but in third grade what do you expect.

Nice writing book, butwoul d like a writing book with styles of writing...e.g. a book report, a cause and effect, a compare and contrast, etc.

Recieved the 5 th grade reading comp. book today. When UPS handed me the package the book was shipped in, I thought it was empty. The book it EXTREMELY thin, 45 pages total. about 23 reading pages and 22 work pages. I will use this book up quick. There's no way this book would last the summer. Should have went with my first choice which was Spectrum. I have 3 other books from Spectrum and I am pretty happy with those. I am really disapointed with this purchase. Will not buy this brand again. If your looking for a book to last you all summer, this one is not it.

Good for a student who needs a little more practice, but as a private tutor I was disappointed in the lack of variety of topics and the over use of multiple choice questions.

I bought Spectrum Vocabulary and Scholastic Success with Multiplication and Division, Grammar and Reading Comprehension workbooks for my (soon to be) third grade son. I wanted to help him be prepared for the next school year and these were a great purchase. They are full of different types of activities that students will enjoy. It also helps me to understand the type of material to expect for the next grade and what to help him with when it comes time for standardized testing. Worth the purchase and quick shipping as well.

I'm an educational therapist. I love the Scholastic series of workbooks in all subject categories for my students. This particular book is great practice for standardized tests - but it also helps a student gain confidence - something often missing with students who don't think they can test well. Practice helps.

My step-daughter was having some issues staying focused in school with reading and comprehension, so I saw this and thought it might be a fun way to peak her interest and get her grades up. She hated it at first, and complained EVERY time we had her do a couple of pages after school, but now if I tell her to do her pages, she willingly does them and understand what she's doing. It's an awesome little book, and it explains things extremely well. The last several times I've told her to do her pages, she's done it by herself and I checked her work and it was perfect. Even her penmanship has improved with the practice. I'll be ordering more for 3rd grade!
