Review

“Vintage Anne Rice—a lushly written, gothic … metaphysical tale. This time, with werewolves.” —The Wall Street Journal “I want to howl at the moon over this. . . . Rice’s style [is] as solid and engaging as anything she has written since her early vampire chronicle fiction.” —Alan Cheuse, The Boston Globe “A fast-paced, heady romp that ranks with [Rice’s] best…. Feisty and terrific fun.” —Joy Tipping, Dallas Morning News  “Intoxicating.” —USA Today  “A delectable cocktail of old-fashioned lost-race adventure, shape-shifting and suspense, brightened by enticing hints of a secret history.” —Elizabeth Hand, The Washington Post“One part Beauty and the Beast love story, one part meditation on morality and immortality, and one part superman tale…. I love Anne Rice, I really do. At her best, she's inventive, seriously entertaining and borders on deep. At her worst, well, you can ponder how anyone can love dressing male characters in turtlenecks as much as she does (a lot. She loves it a lot). She's in a rut with this book, albeit a fun rut. Let's review the elements of an Anne Rice rut- 1) man turns into "preternatural" being due to being bitten by another "preternatural" being 2) man discovers and relishes his great new powers and probable immortality 3) man struggles with leaving his mortal life behind 4) man has an intimidating mother 5) workaholic genius woman doctors 6) Old houses/renovation 7) Turtlenecks 8) Porsches 9) self-funded archeology 10) lots of sex 11) flannel nightgowns 12) Catholics 13) Night 14) Feeding on evil doers 15) manic genius teenagers 16) fantastic wealth, no strings attached.

If I am totally honest, I wasn't real excited about reading this book. I just kept thinking, do I really want to read a book about werewolves? The answer was a resounding NO. I bought the book because I love Anne Rice novels. By the time I had made it to chapter 5 I was totally absorbed in the story. Anne Rice has a way of drawing you into her stories, making you care about the people in her novels. You become emotionally invested in what is happening to the characters. If you are looking for full moon transformations, mindless killing, and the cliche werewolf story - you won't find it in this book. I don't think it is a book about werewolves as much as it is a story about a man transforming and seeing the world in a different perspective. Yes the Wolf Gift changes him, but to me the book was a story of choices, learning, and understanding. Of course I am sure everyone who reads it gets something unique out of it. I was enthralled by how the Wolf Gift made the main character seek out innocent people who are being harmed, how he questioned whether or not he was good or evil. You fear for his safety, you want him to get the answers he is seeking. Half-way into the book I wanted "The Wolf Gift" myself! :) I can't remember another werewolf story or movie making me feel that way.By chapter 39 when answers starting coming, I was smiling at the history of mankind. I really enjoyed this book. I love that is not a typical werewolf story. I enjoyed all of the characters and I am looking forward to the next chronicle.

In my college days after a viewing of the then new Queen of the Damned movie I became curious about the source material for the film. I started at the beginning and devoured (with few exceptions) pretty much every book Anne Rice had written. As I was reading the Queen of the Damned novel (the book is WAY better than the movie btw) I took note of a comment in the novel regarding werewolves. Since werewolves exist in this universe I hoped maybe one day Anne Rice would grace us with a book about these creatures. Well, lo and behold she did! It had been awhile since she had written a book set in this universe so I was a little anxious if it would hold up to her other works. As soon as I started reading I was drawn right back into that world and fell in love with this new group of characters. Reading Anne Rice again after so long felt like catching up with an old friend. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope she writes many more about these wonderful characters.

Not Anne Rice's best characters, they did not inspire my loyalty. I could not envision the bestial love scenes without feeling a bit ill-- maybe I lack imagination. I speak as a person who owns most of the Witching Hour series and maybe all of the Vampire Chronicles. I loved the narrative book of Christ the Lord-- it was amazing. So when I tell you all that I did not love this, I just didn't.

I read a lot of reviews how bad this book is. But I finally have read it by myself to make my own opinion. And I strongly disagree with the ones who says it's bad.I give five stars because I really liked plot of story. Anne Rice changed my opinion about many things in life. So she did same with werewolves. I can confess I hated werewolves, thought they were just "stupid dogs", but this book changed my opinion. Anne Rice showed these mythical creatures in other spotlight. As loving creatures with their own story and philosophy of life. She showed they aren't some heartless beasts. Anne as always turned some banal thing into something magical.Well, first half of book was...quite boring. But another half was amazing! In the end of book Anne came back to her incredible story telling and revealing secrets. I can say I usually "know" how book gonna end, but this time I had no idea it will end so good. So, in the conclusion I must say it wasn't as bad as people were reviewing everywhere, I wasn't disappointed. It is good book, interesting plot. But...one "but", this book doesn't have that charm Anne had in Vampires Chronicles. It's just...something's missing... Something is gone... But of course, it's different story, different plot. I can feel this book is very mature, calm. There are action scenes, but in all and all, it's calm book, relaxing. This type of book that you can just read and enjoy simple reading.Any way, I enjoyed every single page of this book. In 2014 March 6th it was translated and published in Lithuanian, so I got that book. Maybe it is because Lithuanian editions are bad and I really hate reading in my native language... But any way, I never believe what people review, I always read books and make my own opinion. Five stars and that's it. Good book for me.

This is one of the best anthologies I've read. Pretty much all the stories were solid and compelling, and generally had some humor- because, hey, rogues! I don't know that I can pick out a favorite story or 2, because they all were compelling good reads.OK, except for Martin's. His read like- and probably was- "historical" notes for his GoT novels. No characterization, no fleshing out, just a dry record of "this happened and then that happened". As someone who is not a GoT expert, it wasn't even clear how it fit into the history of the novels, plus the names were confusing and there was no family tree or glossary to consult. I would honestly not even call this a story. But the rest of the book was great!

Rogues, the short story anthology edited by George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois, contains over twenty stories of above average quality and wonderful use of the titular quality that connects all the stories. The twenty-one stories from several genres features significant characters as rogues no matter gender, species, and orientation from authors both well-known to general audiences and some note so.Of the twenty-one stories featured in Rogues the three best not only were high quality writing and features very roguish characters, but also were able to introduce a reader into the already established universe they take place in that only enhanced the story. The opening story “Tough Times All Over” takes place within the First Law world that Joe Abercrombie established himself writing about, “The Inn of the Seven Blessings” by Matthew Hughes takes place with in the world of Archonate, and “A Cargo of Ivories” by Garth Nix takes place within the world of Sir Hereward and Mister Fitz. While these were the best, the stories by Joe R. Lansdale, Michael Stanwick, and Patrick Rothfuss set within an establish world they had create were also very good. The stories especially created for this anthology is a mixture of the very good, the bad, and those that were just missing something. Daniel Abraham’s “The Meaning of Love”, David W. Ball’s “Provenance”, and Scott Lynch’s “A Year and A Day in Old Theradane” were wonderfully written stories in two separate genres that were in the top seven stories of the whole collection. “Now Showing” by Connie Willis is unfortunately one of the worst stories of the collection which was a shame considering that she wrote about several interesting ideas, but the execution with the characters crushed the story. Yet some of the stories while good and having roguish characters just felt like they were missing something: “Heavy Metal” was missing a fuller backstory to the main character and a better understanding of the supernatural powers at work yet once done could become a fascinating future series for Cherie Priest, and “The Curious Affair of the Dead Wives” was fantastic homage to Sherlock Holmes and John Watson by Lisa Tuttle that just felt it could have been more.Yet some of the biggest disappointments in this collection were from established authors and their established series. The worst story of the collection is “A Better Way to Die” by Paul Cornell that takes place in his alternate history timeline that features the spy Johnathan Hamilton but the reader has no idea about the world if you had never read an earlier story that featured Hamilton. And my personal disappointment was “The Rogue Prince” that George R.R. Martin wrote as an Archmaester of the Citadel as a biography of Daemon Targaryen but was more of a history of the events leading up to The Dance of the Dragons that he told in “The Princess and the Queen”.The twenty-one stories that make up Rogues feature--more than not--very good short stories from across genres whether in established worlds or one-offs. Yet like all anthologies, it is a mixed bag in quality and expectations, but often than not the reader will be satisfied after finishing these stories with time well spent in several wonderful settings following some very unscrupulous individiuals.Individual Story RatingsTough Times All Over by Joe Abercrombie (4.5/5)What Do You Do? by Gillian Flynn (3.5/5)The Inn of the Seven Blessings by Matthew Hughes (5/5)Bent Twig by Joe R. Lansdale (4/5)Tawny Petticoats by Michael Stanwick (4/5)Provenance by David W. Ball (4/5)Roaring Twenties by Carrie Vaughn (3/5)A Year and A Day in Old Theradane by Scott Lynch (4/5)Bad Brass by Bradley Denton (2.5/5)Heavy Metal by Cherie Priest (3/5)The Meaning of Love by Daniel Abraham (4/5)A Better Way to Die by Paul Cornell (1/5)Ill Seen in Tyre by Steven Saylor (3/5)A Cargo of Ivories by Garth Nix (4.5/5)Diamonds from Tequila by Walter Jon Williams (3/5)The Caravan to Nowhere by Phyllis Eisenstein (2.5/5)The Curious Affair of the Dead Wives by Lisa Tuttle (3/5)How the Marquis Got His Coat Back by Neil Gaiman (3.5/5)Now Showing by Connie Willis (2/5)The Lightning Tree by Patrick Rothfuss (4/5)The Rogue Princes, or, A King’s Brother by George R.R. Martin (2.5/5)

I bought the book for the Scott Lynch (Lies of Loch Lamora) story, which was wonderful, but the other stories introduced me to a whole slew of characters whose authors write of scams, misdirection, and "not everything seems as it appears". Most stories slant towards the science fiction/fantasy side, but not all: there are rogues everywhere. I ended up buying the first book of perhaps a dozen series based on the creativity in the short stories. Turned out to be an expensive purchase (for the irony impaired: not for the book itself but for the followup purchases) that has added to my "to be read" pile immensely. Which is I guess why authors put their stories in collections like this. A great introduction to a wide range of creative authors and interesting characters.

This is a great book. Loved all the stories. Even the ones I would never have even considered reading by themselves turned out to be very enjoyable..That said: I have to address the elephant in the room. WTH is up with Martin!?!??! Am I the only one that is just baffled about how boring his story is? (And this ain't the first time; his contribution to The Book of Swords was even worse)I don't even claim to be a writer, but I did give it a try once and took an at home creative writer course -back in the days of word processors- and I remember one of the first critiques I got from my writing coach was; a story is not just the narrating of a series of events, it's got to have a point to it. That's all The Rogue Prince is, -at least as far as I've gotten with the story, admittedly I haven't finished. I have been skipping pages though hoping to get to something that feels like a story instead of a pro-log.This is not how I remember A Song of Fire and Ice reading like. Then again, it's been sooo long since the last book, maybe I've forgotten. Surly though, if ASoFaI read like this I would have never got through A Game of Thrones. Please tell me if I'm wrong about this.Despite my rant; the book is a solid 5 stars and then some, despite Martin.

I am from Hong Kong and I have studied Taoist Qi-gong for 4 years. One day I come across this book and I am just stunned. The (two-volume) books are so packed with information that it seems to me like an "index". I am reading the book slowly. The Merkaba energy flow within the body described in the book are very similar to what we do in the Chinese Qi-Gong. For example,1. One important Qi energy path is the heat / light energy going anti-clockwise upward spiral form along the spine, while another path is clockwise downward spiral moving downward along the spine.2. Mr Melchizedek says Qi is dragged from nature, while Merkaba is from 4th dimension and he is correct. This is also true. In our practice we drag Qi from nature, sky, earth or trees, etc. We do not drag "4th dimension energy". Afterall we don't have a pyramid in Hong Kong.3. Multiple Qi paths are running simultaneously in our body or what we called meridians. We have "water" imaginary energy path going UPWARD and "fire" energy path going DOWNWARD simultaneously (straight line) in the middle meridian (not spine). Before reading the book, I was always wondering why energy moving upward is far easier than moving downward--Because I am also a "left-brainer".However the prana and breathing techniques are different. My understanding is that western way and Chinese way we are learning 2 different approaches to the same goal. The flower of life geometry and origin of human story is completely new to me, but is fully complement to the Chinese Yin-Yang (i.e. "2") and then One (i.e. Tao or "1") then Zero "0" or void. This is simply amazing.

I would like to return this title for a credit just like a did with the Volume 2 one. I should have known not to get the second one. There are many Figures in both books that just don't show up in the books which is very frustrating so there is no possibility of understanding the geometry he is describing. Volume one is the same. Some photos show up but no geometric figures. Please return. I may have to buy the hardcover at a later date. It must be because of Kindle or something.

Oh boy, you can't get a better book than this and the other one. It has answered all my questions and my life is peaceful. It was the right timing for me and I hope others find the same. Drunvalo is very connected to source and has all his memories from living on other worlds/planets. Yes it is possible. Where do you think we came from after all! Jump into this one.

I was supposed to read this book before taking a class. I ordered a Kindle version.I was quite disappointed and frustrated to find that around 75% of the diagrams which were needed to explain the text were not included.Unfortunately I was not prepared for the class. This e book is not acceptable..

2.5 stars It’s 225 pages on Sacred Geometry, not on how one might construct the Merkaba. Although quite brilliant, Drunvalo leads the reader on a dizzying number of approaches to his subject, which I’m not sure I could even nail down. Is the book worth the money? Yes, if you know ahead of time that it won’t get into much substance.BTW, the Kindle version lacks/ can’t load many of the illustrations that the book shows.

I would have given this book 5 stars but because there are many times though out the book it refers you to his 1st book for the information that willdeepen your understanding of the subject at hand, that being said, I would suggest getting both books at the same time. I happen to be after information that is in his 2nd book and went ahead and ordered both books at the same time. Started reading the 2nd book and because I didn't start with his 1st book I had to flip back and forth to get better understanding. Hope I didn't confuse you... bottom line, I suggest ordering book 1 first or both together.

This book is pretty good. The only issue I have with it is a major lack of organization. Many of the ideas discussed seem to stop right in the middle. There are many times when the author says "we'll come back to this" but it doesn't really make sense why he changes the subject in the first place. Makes it a little hard to follow.

If u ever wondered about the pyramids and UFO'S this is for you. Really makes u think alot about what is fact and fictional. To me it explains the tall black shadows you hear Amy Allen talk about on the ghost channel. Evil is real and many know how and why. This book gives you the 411.

My LO can't get enought of the Berenstain bears books - the early books. The origional books have such clever rhymes and antics that I love them and so do the children. They are nightly reading in our house and some of the stories my kids have memorzied within a week and they read it to me.

My daughter loves this book so much that I have almost memorized the words already. I have loved Berenstain Bears as a kid, and I am glad to see the stories I remembered and cherished as a kid, to be in this one book. Love it!

Very disappointed in this book! We have other berenstain bears books and the stories are great, the whole family loves reading them. So when I saw that this book had great reviews, I grabbed it. The "stories" are meant for really young kinds. My 3 year old wants nothing to do with this book, and to be honest, I have zero interest in reading it to her. I think in another 6 months she'll be able to read it by herself, maybe that's when this book will come in handy.

We love this collection!! My son is 2.5 and he has already memorized the box story. I love the simple things tese teach...directions, he and she, old isn't always bad, imagination, counting, addition and subtraction, creativity, clues, and asking for help! Haha. Just Great!

This is a pretty good mix of books, some are simple and some are more wordy stories. We should be able to use this book for a number of years to help our child learn to read.

My nephews love this book. Everyday they get to pick a book to sit down and read for an allotted amount of time (they can read longer if they wish). The stories are engaging and I know they are wholesome because I read the same stories when I was their age. It's teaching them a variety of words and they love the quality of the pictures. A+!

My 3-1/2 yr. old grandson is absolutely thrilled with this volume of stories. He loves them for read-aloud stores, and enjoys just looking at the pictures by himself. It was the perfect gift!

My 2 yr old son loves these big Berenstain books. He asks me to read them every night, and even has some of the stories memorized.
