About the Author

Philip B. Bedient is the Herman Brown Professor of Engineering, with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Rice University, Houston, TX. He received the Ph.D. degree in environmental engineering sciences from the University of Florida. He is a registered professional engineer and teaches and performs research in surface hydrology, modeling, and flood prediction systems, and ground water hydrology. He has directed over 50 research projects over the past 31 years, and has written over 180 journal articles and conference proceedings over that time. He has also written four textbooks in the area of surface and groundwater hydrology. He received the Shell Distinguished Chair in environmental science (1988–92), the C.V. Theis award in 2007, and he was elected Fellow of ASCE in 2006. Dr. Bedient has worked on a variety of hydrologic problems, including river basin analyses, major floodplain studies, groundwater contamination models, and hydrologic/GIS models in water resources. He has been actively involved in developing computer systems for flood prediction and warning, and recently directed the development of a real-time flood alert system (FAS2) for the Texas Medical Center (TMC) in Houston. The FAS2 is based on converting NEXRAD radar data directly to rainfall in a GIS framework, which is then used to predict peak channel flows. Dr. Bedient is organizing the Houston test bed for the Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA), an NSF Engineering Research Center led by University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and Rice University is a strategic outreach partners. CASA’s revolutionary sensing technology is expected to increase the warning time for flash floods and other severe weather events with greater accuracy than existing systems. The first high technology radar was deployed in 2007 in the TMC in Houston as part of the on-going flood warning system developed for the Texas Medical Center. Dr. Bedient has overseen the monitoring, modeling, and remediation at numerous hazardous waste sites, including six Superfund sites, and U.S. Air Force bases in five states. He has extensive experience in contaminant transport at sites impacted with chlorinated solvents and fuels. He has served on two National Academy of Science committees relating to environmental remediation and technology, and has received research funding from NSF, the U.S. EPA, the U.S. Department of Defense, the State of Texas, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the City of Houston.   Wayne C. Huber is Professor of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at Oregon State University, Corvallis. His doctoral work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology dealt with thermal stratification in reservoirs, for which he received the Lorenz G. Straub Award from the University of Minnesota and the Hilgard Hydraulic Prize from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He is a member of several technical societies and has served several administrative functions within the ASCE. He is the author of over 120 reports and technical papers, is a registered professional engineer, and has served as a consultant on numerous studies done by public agencies and private engineering firms. Beginning at the University of Florida and continuing at Oregon State University, Dr. Huber’s research has included studies of urban hydrology, Storm water management, nonpoint source runoff, river basin hydrology, lake eutrophication, rainfall statistics, and hydrologic and water quality modeling. He is one of the original authors of the EPA Storm Water Management Model and has helped to maintain and improve the model continuously since 1971. Dr. Huber is an internationally recognized authority on runoff quantity and quality processes in urban areas.   Baxter E. Vieux is Director of the Natural Hazards and Disaster Research Center and Professor in the School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science, University of Oklahoma, Norman where he teaches courses in hydrology, GIS, surveying, measurements, water quality management, and engineering graphics and design. Before joining OU in 1990, he held a professorship at Michigan State University teaching watershed management after earning his PhD there. Dr. Vieux was recently appointed as Adjunct Professor with the Department of Environmental Engineering and Science, Rice University, Houston, Prior to his academic career, he spent ten years with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service serving as Acting State Engineer, and being responsible for statewide engineering design and construction programs in Michigan. He is a registered professional engineer in three states and is co-principal and founder of Vieux & Associates, Inc., an engineering technology company with clients in the US and internationally in radar rainfall, GIS, and hydrology. Dr. Vieux is the innovator and architect of the first commercially available physics-based distributed hydrologic model, Vflo™, which uses real-time radar inputs for hydrologic analysis and prediction. Span urban and rural hydrology, the model has worldwide applicability. A patent is held for a method of realtime distributed model calibration. Consultative services include major corporations and engineering companies, and domestic and international water agencies. Externally sponsored academic research has been funded by NASA, EPA, NWS, NOAA, Army Corps of Engineers, NSF, and state/local agencies. Internationally, he has conducted research and worked on projects in France, Japan, Poland, Niger, Nicaragua, Taiwan, Paraguay, Korea and Romania. He has authored over 110 publications in hydrology including a recent book in its second edition, Distributed Hydrologic Modeling Using GIS, Kluwer Academic Press,Vol. 48.

Was required to get this for a course in hydrology. It's makes a complicated subject easy to understand.

My well-loved copy of this book has helped me though several courses and done so excellently. It has an even balance of theory and practical applications. For each topic there is usually a few paragraphs of explanation, then some formula derivations, then an example. The examples are critical, I have worked through almost all of them at this point and they are really helpful.

What I expected. Came in good condition.

Book arrived as prompted by seller. The book is poorly organized as student has to jump around from one chapter to another. Meaning you start chapter 2 and then chapter 5 for next chronicle concept covered. Examples are ok.

I have just received the book and it has a loose cover (see the attached image). I don't know what should be its condition after I start to use it since it's already loose. Not happy to see this.

This book is garbage. I would highly suggest buying it from someone that will take it back. All of my pages fell out of the bindings and are just hanging out between other pages. I would much rather have bought an e-edition of the book because then at least it might have lasted longer

This book is helpful if you have another more in-depth text pertaining to fluid mechanics. Overall, a good book. I've found some typos in the examples that I hope are fixed in the next edition.

I was required to purchase this book for an entry level hydrology class. Even now, I continually refer back to it as a reference in my graduate level classes. The book comprehensively introduces you to most aspects of hydrology and hydraulics, with examples and case studies that really reinforce the basics. Hang on to it after your class -- you'll find it's a super handy resource.

Being new to set dancing, I wanted a book with the major sets, which was important to me. Plus, each was presented in concise, readable form that made it easy to read and follow with You Tube videos of the various sets.I liked the back ground and history section in the beginning, too. Nice to have a perspective of where they came from, how they evolved, etc.A worthwhile purchase whether you are new to set dancing or want a comprehensive reference book

Seminal work on Irish Set dancing. Should be in every set dancers library.

_Toss the Feathers_ is the definitive book on Irish set dancing. I bought a copy in Galway City, and it has saved me innumerable times. I carry it with me to all classes and ceilis; it's well-worn and well-loved. Besides the most common sets, Pat gives us notes for beautiful and obscure local dances. His introduction also includes an illuminating history of set dancing. Beware: you will not teach yourself to dance from this book if you have no prior knowledge of set dancing. However, it is ideal for supplementing your knowledge from classes. When two set dancers disagree on the "correct" version of a set, one inevitably pulls out a copy of Pat's book, and his judgement is trusted. All of us set dancing addicts are awaiting the upcoming sequel. Buy it now! You'll never regret this useful reference on bad days when you can't even remember how the Ballyvourney Jig Set begins.

As a step dancer with limited exposure to set dancing, I found this book a wonderful introduction. Although I cannot personally vouch for the accuracy of his notation, I know/ have heard of several who do. In any case, it is well written and researched.... An excellent historical guide. Probably the best Irish dance (step or set) book sold on Amazon.

Amazing! This obscure book was readily available through amazon.com. Even though it came from a seller in Europe, it was reasonably priced and arrived quickly and in excellent condition.

Is this a guide to life, through physics, or an introduction to physics by means of analogies from real life? It could work either way. As an old physicist nerd eager to belatedly learn the secrets of life, I may be one of the few who read all 21 chapters. There are many good insights to be had, as well as some semi- tough slogging in the middle. There is good use of language and metaphors and some places where more or better editing might have prevented the odd word choice. You will emerge with new perspectives. Best read when young and your world paths are unconstrained, but valuable at any age.

The science in this book is really cool, bit I felt I was getting hit over the head with all the exclamation points. The examples felt a bit corny and some of the "jokes" were a bit dad-ish (sexist, dated). It reads like an old high school science teacher trying a little too hard to be cool. But I think science IS cool, so it wasn't a total loss.

Started reading with a feeling that I will finally understand quantum physics, but through the process I learned more about psychology. Enjoyed some of the similarities between physics and life sciences, but equally got disappointed when the relationship seemed far far fetched. The book reads very well, intelligently presented and enjoyable choice of words.

I very much enjoyed this book. It was interesting, thought-provoking, and I learned a lot. Some of the explanations were clearer than any I had previously come across, both in the world of science and in the world of people and interactions. So yes, strongly recommended for if you are looking for something to make you think. But not as a source of gospel truth. The book is mainly based on analogies between scientific principles and laws and everyday life. And they are interesting analogies. But they have all the problems of arguing from analogy: some of the analogies are weak or even non-existent, and if you strain an analogy too far you're unlikely to come to truth. Particularly on the "everyday life" side I felt that it was over-simplistic, with lots of generalisations made to fit the analogy, and those generalisations would neither describe my life nor the lives of those I know. What it claims to be deep insights from scientific rules sometimes felt to me just to be tenuous analogies between cliches and science. And it got old quickly saying things like "It's not my fault. It's the laws of the universe". That just doesn't work when all you have is an analogy.Caveats aside, though, it was fun to read, it was interesting, the science side had some particularly clear explanations, and I would strongly recommend it.

Dear readers,   I just finished Kunal Das' recent work, The Quantum Guide To Life.  This is a witty book describing physics and human nature. Das describes many topics and how they relate to fundamental laws of our universe.  Globalization is discussed as a cultural-economic transformation creating an unavoidable new hybrid world.  The post World War II world sees analysis concerning "socio-economic gradients" that became glaringly apparent eventually raising the developing world's living standards. Even the delicate issue of immigration from Third World countries is covered with the accurate analogy of a dam.  Finally, Das insightfully states a formula for success = "Disciplined hard work x persistence x aggressive pursuit of goals."  I highly recommend this book.  Sincerely, D. Webb

Great way to introduce physics and bind it together with everyday notions of social interactions. An enjoyable read without the complications

A light-hearted application of the laws of physics to human nature. And incidentally, not a bad overview of physics itself, though probably more of a "physics for jocks" than "in depth." That's understandable - if it was burdened down with mathematical equations, it wouldn't sell as well, or be as comprehensive. I told my wife that my laziness wasn't my fault, that it was due to the second law of thermodynamics. It still didn't wash with her. ;-)

This is a novel approach to quantum sociology. The author ties physics to life experiences and in the process explains some q.m.. terms in a way I had never encountered . Real EUREKA moment for me. A must read for quantum mechanics buffs.

What a take on an alien invasion. This book had me hooked by the 2nd chapter. I really enjoyed the different point of views. Especially the silencers. Cassie was hilarious, feisty and strong. I loved the way she was able to think her way through almost any situation. I honestly believed her and Parish would meet up and fall in love from the beginning. Especially with her huge crush on him, but when she met up with Evan, I knew Parish did not have chance. Sammy at times seemed older for his age and then younger during different times. I made a real connection with all the main characters and was extremely happy with one unnamed sadist was killed. I wanted to read this book before seeing the movie, came out 2 days ago. I hope the movie does it justice because this is one heck of a book. You don't want to miss it. I purchased it paperback because it was cheaper than kindle.

I'm torn between a 2 and a 3 on this one because the first book is actually not bad. But the series as a whole ends up making very little sense and the conclusion of the overall story is fairly rushed and entirely unsatisfying. While the set up in this first installment was really quite articulate and left a great deal of promise, I must rate it as part of a whole and so doing must rate it to reflect the wandering ineffectual second installment which had no real beginning or end but just simply was as well as the third installment which seemed to accept the eventual destruction of man but ended with sacrificing the character I probably most liked in the entire series. At times the motives of the characters was nearly indecipherable. And the author was so willing to kill characters that in the end I felt like I was Quentin Tarantino film - there were so many deaths, they stopped feeling like tragedies and became merely plot devices to move forward a story that didn't seem to know where it was going until it got there.

The 5th Wave was an adequate start to what might just be a promising new series for me. The world building was well executed, the tone was bleak and as a whole, one of the best dystopian worlds I’ve visited by far. This was one of those reading experiences that peaked an unexpected dread that seeps through the pages. I highly recommended this book with some obvious reservations.___________________________________WHAT I LIKED+ I marveled at Rick Yancey’s exceptional ability to effortlessly paint a perfectly terrible doomed world. This is seriously one of the most dreadful world’s I’ve visited in the dystopian realm, and it wasn’t so much the imagery that left me agape and with a paralyzed immobility, but the choice of words Yancey used that set the tone and triggered an inevitable appreciation for things we often take for granted ― family and companionship for starters, home cooked meals, nicknames that grate on the nerves, the sound of music, laughter, trust, time to name a few."Even when there were people around to call me anything, no one ever called me Cassiopeia. Just my father, and only when he was teasing me, and always in a very bad Italian accent: Cass-ee-oh-PEE-a. It drove me crazy. I didn’t think he was funny or cute, and it made me hate my own name. “I’m Cassie!” I’d holler at him. “Just Cassie!” Now I’d give anything to hear him say it just one more time."+ Most, if not all the characters started out as fragmented dystopian archetypes which is an element I appreciate in dystopian books. We have the lonesome and extremely cynical Cassie Sullivan who’s determined to find and rescue her little brother Sam from the Others. The high school football star Ben Parish who is found wrestling with an inner demon that peppers a dark overtone onto the story line. And lastly, the complex and altogether mystifying Evan Walker who truly got the story moving. Strictly speaking, I loved seeing how each one fought to hold on to their existence and the endless terror that ushered in new moments of painful regret.+ I have to admit that while I did see Evan Walker’s unexpected twist early in the story, I was really surprised with the way his character arc unfolded. Truth be told, Evan Walker is by far my favorite character in this book. Most interesting to me was how he changed over time, and how his internal conflict manifested throughout the plot line. Seriously, author Rick Yancey could write an entire book on his character arc alone, it’s well-executed and genius!“I’m a shark, Cassie,” he says slowly, drawing the words out, as if he might be speaking to me for the last time. Looking into my eyes with tears in his, as if he’s seeing me for the last time. “A shark who dreamed he was a man.”+ It’s rare to find a distinctive voice that can say so much with so very little words in the dystopian genre. One of my all-time favorites being Katniss Everdeen. That being said, Cassie’s storytelling was utterly enthralling and simply brilliant! The dialogue, the banter, the altercations, all of it was written in such a realistic dialogue.WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE- My most prominent complaint with The 5th Wave was with the alternate point of views. Firstly, I should confess that I’m not typically a fan of multiple POV’s―albeit, The Lunar Chronicles making the exception. That said, I understand the author’s choice in giving the reader a glimpse into Zombie’s and Evan’s mind and thought process, the story and conflicts wouldn’t have developed otherwise. On the other hand, however, with Cassie’s spellbinding narration, it became irritating having to take in the abrupt switches. To boot, with the consistent distance between each character, I felt there was a lack of attachment, which in turn made me less empathic towards their plights.- The plot was gripping and full of tension, but after a good quarter into the book, I seemingly lost interest; the plot didn’t reach any great heights and I expected more. To begin with, I had hoped to see Cassie fighting her way into a battle of wits against the Others on a more grandiose scale. **SPOILER** It stands to reason that the way she managed to find her brother was too convenient and clunky. I don’t know. I think it would have been amazing to see her recruited along with the child soldiers. I’m almost convinced there would have been a lot more action and plot development than what we received.**END SPOILER**. All that to say, I didn’t like the way the story drifted into a cringe-worthy romantic subplot that released a whiff of insta-love to say the least.- Personally, I would have enjoyed the story on a greater scale had I actually seen each Wave actually unfold rather than have the author Cassie show them to me. Other than the 3rd Wave, and everything it entailed, I never really felt any suspense or desperation for the other Waves. What I mean to say is, the emotional impact was vague and missed the mark.- I’m not sure how I feel about Cassie at this point, she’s definitely in a mixed bag for me. While I love her dry humor and reckless infatuation with Evan, I found her to be way two-dimensional. In truth, we are only shown one part of her persona and that’s her snippy attitude and response through reactions and emotions. Everything else, however, was undeveloped and lacked a great deal of depth. It goes without saying, her snarky approach became tedious and bogged down my interest in her character towards the end. I’m hoping to see more depth and complexity to her character arc in book two.AFTERTHOUGHTSIn the end, I enjoyed The 5th Wave. I found the world-building and tone to be most incredible, there were certainly some thought-provoking moments to boot, and the story telling was (as aforementioned) spellbinding, but overall, the story wasn’t as spectacular as I anticipated it to be. In any case, I'll still be reading book two ― which I've already purchased

I'll start with a disclaimer: I LOVE alien stories. The ones where the aliens are nice are my favorite thought so I went into this one not knowing if I'd like it or not.Earth is under attack from aliens. It's so intense death seems to be the only outcome for Earthlings. However, this is not horror, nor is it post-apocalyptic either since it's happening as we read. It's science fiction at its best. The story is told in three different POVs, two of them being first person. I admit I got lost the first time it switched. I wondered how Cassie suddenly got sick with the disease from the third wave; however, after this little hic-up, I paid more attention to the section changes and didn't have any more problems. The idea behind the story is plausible, enough you might catch yourself looking at the sky from time to time, and you won't see the next electricity failure the same way ever again. All four main characters showed courage, strength, and they all faced their own dilemmas, yet my favorite was Evan. Although I loved the story and the way the author put us into the protagonist's heads, I'd say Evan is the reason I give this book a 5* (in lieu of a 4*). HE IS the difference between 'Yep, I love the story!' and 'Oh, I want to read more!'I'll definitely pick up 'The Infinite Sea, The Fifth Wave #2'.

When I first started the book, I stayed up until 1:30 AM and still couldn't sleep after I laid it down because my heart was beating out of my chest from the excitement. It has taken me about 8 hours total to finish reading because I couldn't put it down! If you enjoy dystopian, futuristic thrillers - you're going to love this one. The only part that kind of tripped me up throughout the book was the point of view changes that happened every few chapters. I had to flip back at first to see whose mind I was in during that chapter. I'm also not much for reading profanity, but that's personal preference.
