From the chapters I've read, an improved translation from previous edition of The New English Bible, and even easier to understand, process, and appreciate when compared to the KJV, NRSV and other translations. Same solid footnotes and chapter introductions (better than Oxford NRSV 3e). But the new print font is smaller, lighter, and harder to read for tired eyes, verse numbering moved from margins to text superscripts, and the paper slightly thinner, doesn't thumb through as easily. Assume Oxford wanted the same handy-size book but had to cram in more content -- many of the general articles (about 200 pages) could be deleted or shortened. Pages now helpfully numbered from front to back as opposed to recurrent numbering of OT, Aprocryhpa, then NT -- about 1500 pages total. Same excellent maps. Easily the best translation and annotations for serious students. However with failing vision, I still read the previous NEB with better print contrast, occassionly checking the REB for better understanding, and sometimes checking the KJV to recall the meaningful wording I first learned as a child (e.g., 23rd Psalm).

The research leading to this translation advanced the clarity of translation substantially beyond classics such as the King James Bible. The reference notes give the reader insight into the meanings of the scripture text in their historical settings and discuss so many of the difficult-to-translate passages. A must-have for Sunday School teachers, students, and classical scholars.

The REB is one of my go-to bible translations (the other two being the RSV-CE and the Jerusalem Bible). It is a well conceived and executed revision of the New English Bible (first published in the 1960s). It tones down some of the NEB's more conspicuous quirks, and it's about the most responsibly "inclusivized" revision of the 1980s. I keep a copy on my desk.The Oxford Study edition has prefatory material and footnotes written from a standard academic liberal protestant perspective. There is also a "Select Index to People, Places, and Themes in the Bible" and a selection of 14 maps from the Oxford Bible Atlas.

It's very hard to write a review about "The Bible" because there are taboos connected with each one. In my opinion, the Revised English Bible is a treasure. The translation is accurate and the translators and their credentials are listed plainly in the front of the book. But this is not all. The Oxford Study Bible contains countless numbers of glosses, articles and notations of alternative wording. The Apocryphal works, often forgotten by other study bibles is clear and well annotated. The sheer magnitude of this work is amazing. On the down side, many copies only exist in the USA in a paperback edition. This takes away much of the quality of the binding. 20 years ago when the study bible was first available, the product was available in a sturdy hard cover edition

I enjoy the beauty of this translation and wish it’s lyrical quality was more available to the general public! Abp. Fulton Sheen said it was, for him, the best reading English Bible! The notes are rich in content and a terrific study bible.

Strongly recommended for people interested in the poetry, historical context, and message of the Bible who don't want to go blue in the face trying to understand wordier translations.This bible makes things clear and accessible on first reading without making the text boring or monotonous. It maintains its poetry, but is no more poetic (and maybe at times it is less) than the NRSV. Unlike the NRSV this bible expresses the thoughts of the orignal authors even if word-for-word translation comes at a bit of an expense -- this is a huge plus for young people, lay people, people (re)discovering the bible, or people skeptical of many aspects of Christianity. This bible gives you beautiful words minus the confusion that often accompany more literal translations. As a plus it gives you historical and linguistic context galore to enhance your understanding. If you're not in the mood to read footnotes you don't have to -- this Bible is quite readable on its own and the footnotes are there to further the depth of your undersanding of the history, lingquistics, and meaning of what you're reading.The REB contains nearly 100 pages of articles on early Christianity and theological development that are a must for anyone desiring an honest understanding of Christianity. Honest and thorough, yet concise. Awesome feature.Amazon's service was good. No complaints.The book is indeed a paperback and is large. This is not the type of Bible you throw in a backpack when on the go or lend out freely. The NRSV is an ecumenical and theologically honest Bible that is available in hardcover study Bible editions at the same price as this flimsy one. The NRSV is a bit harder to read, but if you plan on studying the text and linguistics of the Bible rather than simply the message go with the NRSV.The great thing about the REB is how easy it is to move through it and understand it without sacrificing aesthetics. Its sound and accurate.The REB is not nearly as gender inclusive as the NRSV, strange that it would uphold a useless conservative tradition when it often takes liberties that no other literary or scholarly Bible would take.Understandable. Literary. Historical.

My first books on the Tarot (over 40 years ago) were those by Eden Grey. These were followed by Eileen Connoly's three "Handbooks" (to this day, probably my favorite of the dozens that I have read). Hajo Banzhaf's "Tarot and the Journey of the Hero" is quite possibly the most enlightening book on the Major Arcana that I have ever read. Why do I mention all of these other books? Because as much as I love every one of them for how they have helped me understand the Tarot, if I was to recommend a single book to a beginner who wanted to start on a meaningful journey into the Tarot, it would be this one.There's no way around it - if you want to achieve meaningful results with the Tarot, you have to commit to learning the 78 meanings (156 if you use reversed meanings), and this takes time. But with the excellent descriptions of the cards themselves, and especially valuable discussions of the symbols contained on the cards, I believe the time can be condensed, and a deeper understanding of the cards obtained using this book than any other single book that I have read. Even for someone who first learned the cards 40 years ago (and whose memory is not quite what it once was), this book provided an excellent "refresher" - and provided some new insights that I had not read before.Note: This book is very closely tied to the Rider/Waite/Coleman Tarot deck (and is illustrated with the Universal Waite deck). Although there are many different Tarot decks available (I have about a dozen), I HIGHLY recommend using one of the Waite decks for study with this book.

I like quick reference meanings on both major and minor arcana ( see photo). The book has good, extended section on major arcana, but generally I find the interpretations overly complicated and somehow lacking at the same time. It's difficult to remember the meanings because of that. I find "Tarot plain and simple" by Anthony Louis much better,especially for a tarot newbie.

This is a truly wonderful book if you are interested in learning the meanings and symbolism of the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot (or one of the decks based on the RWS system...for Crowley or Marseilles, look elsewhere). It is very easy to read, provides heaps of info on every esoteric aspect of the cards - astrological associations and Kabbalistic Tree of Life, for example. A quick history of Tarot and the basics of reading the cards are also covered. The book itself is gorgeous publication with full-colour illustration throughout, glossy pages and a sturdy cover. The author uses the Universal Waite Tarot, which does not come with the book, but I bought it purposely at the same time and was surprised to discover that it's quickly become one of my favourite decks. Thank you, Liz Dean!An aside: as great as I think this book is, it is really and truly a guide to the meanings of the cards, not an exhaustive tool that will teach you how to read Tarot like a pro. If you would like a more comprehensive study of the cards, I recommend Rachel Pollack's 78 Degrees of Wisdom (a very thought-provoking book) or Tarot 101 by Kim Huggens (just like taking a class).I'm glad I bought this book and thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the RWS Tarot symbolism.

If you were confused by all the "beginning" tarot books, set them aside and buy "The Ultimate Guide To Tarot" by Liz Dean. It is by far the best book on tarot I've read so far. So many other books ramble on with incredibly esoteric concepts which unless you've studied them your whole life, would be difficult to understand. This is literally a card by card, step by step, introduction and guideline to reading and comprehending tarot cards. For most readers you would have to go no further than this book. Each card is featured with a large, clear photo, and all of it's attributes plainly written in a logical and sensible format. If you had to buy one and only one book on reading tarot, this has to be it.

This book is an absolute must for anyone starting out reading Tarot. I've been reading Tarot for 18 years now and had a different guide book that I used for about 10 years, which helped but was so outdated that I felt like I wasn't learning everything there is to know about my spreads and cards.... Until I came across this book. Now my spreads are much more detailed and the interpretations have helped greatly, even for someone like me who is familiar with the cards. I have learned new things about the cards that I didn't have access to with the older book I was using.I've also noticed a few typos and misspelled words in the book, but not a big deal for me, since I just write in a correction and leave it as it is.I'm happy with this book. It is a large size, easy to use and the index in back helps to find the card you're looking for without searching the entire book. There is also some added interpretations for astrology and such, which I find helpful when someone is asking for a reading including those specs.Overall I am more confident in my readings because of this book and I know that some people would advise against using a book for interpretations when reading cards, but I on the other hand disagree, because sometimes I get stuck with meanings and what is written in the book details it out perfectly leaving my sitter very impressed and happy with the added detail in their reading- Oh I don't read in person either, all my readings are prepared and emailed so my sitters don't know I'm using a guidebook so it works well for me.

This is an incredibly insightful book. Beautiful color and detailed explanations of each card. This is everything you need to know as a tarot reader (beginner or experienced) There is something in here for all tarot readers. This even includes the Kabbala tree of life pathways, chakra points, crystal correspondence to each of the major arcana. This book shows some cool tarot spreads too! I'm so happy with this purchase. This really is the only tarot book you need! I have read hundreds of tarot books.....this one takes the cake!

This little gem is a short read. I finished it in approximately seven hours, and that included taking exhaustive notes. It packs short, concise definitions and concrete, actionable takeaways. Truly a breath of fresh air.I’ve read too many books at the end of which I have no clue how to apply the things I’ve learned. This book is not one of them. Every single strategy is immediately actionable and well illustrated with real-world examples.Another thing I really appreciate about this book is its organization. All its strategies are neatly organized into the four major categories of EQ skills for easy look-up and reviewal. I intend to keep this book close at hand for those days I need a quick refresher.Some have mentioned that this book seemed too self-promoting for their taste. I have to admit, there was a bit of this, but it all seemed to be pretty well contained in the introduction and conclusion, so you could skip over it if such things bother you, though I didn’t personally find it distasteful.All-in-all, a very enjoyable, short, and practical read. Highly recommended to anyone interested in emotional intelligence and how they can start improving theirs right away.

I am over 70, a retired teacher and this is the first review I have chosen to write on anything ever including hundreds of books. "Me Bad" is that I didn't research anything about the "book" and ordered based on title. This is NOT a book. It has NO qualifications of a book: no table of contents, no publisher, no footnotes, no quotes and no bibliography. There is NO info about the author on or in the book other than a name. No resume, background, awards won... nada. This IS a 140 page pamphlet with huge print and wide spaces between lines, many grammatical errors and continuous repetition. Nothing but "opinionized generalizations." One learns absolutely nothing. The front cover says "25 proven ways to improve..." but there is no proof of anything and not even a deliniation of 25 ways to improve. The pamphlet ends with this request from the author, "I would really appreciate it if you could just share with me what you have learnt from this book.... Please pop over to amazon and share it over in the review...." I "learnt" nothing and now I am "popping over" to Amazon to say "buyer beware".

I don't think being manipulated is that bad, but only when I want to be if you can't resist other requests, then you must have to find a better way to deal with your manipulative nature. What I have discovered is, the book has clearly explained how to increase self-esteem and to show respect to thyself is the only way to gain others respect.All the tips and strategies are explained nicely, I have found them easy to follow and useful in real life practice. Very much appreciated and recommended to everyone struggling with social life.

This book will help you learn and understand more about Emotional Intelligence. You will be able to know how you will improve your emotional skills for you to free your self from manipulation. The book was written in a very simple way for better and easier understanding.

There is written a well constructed guide book to provide you knowledge about emotional intelligence. In this guide book you will go through the reading of best and proven ways, self awareness and self confidence, such a fabulous guide book.

I really like the easy reading and the exercises well explained. I've already completed the book and am now focusing on the practical exercises!

There's something else that sets emotionally intelligent people apart from those who do not have this gift. Emotionally intelligent people are aware of their own strengths and weaknesses and can use different emotions to advantage. For example, a poet may be aware that he writes better when he is upset.

Zdon does a great job of listing hikes in the southern Nevada and California desert. The descriptions and directions he gives are highly accurate. I've done a few dozen of the hikes listed in the book (some before and some since seeing the book) and can attest that the book is highly reliable. One feature that Zdon works into his hike descriptions which I like a lot is a description of the plants in the area. For instance, in describing the Kingston Range (an area I have not yet got to explore) he tells of a yucca-like plant called the nolina and of a "relict stand of white firs" on this desert peak. Details like this make me want to get out and explore that area! (He also mentions that the hiker should keep a watch out for ticks while climbing Kingston Peak, but that's important advice too!) Another interesting area Zdon covers is the Sheep Mountains which are northeast of Las Vegas. Zdon goes beyond the typical Joshua Tree and Death Valley hikes that are covered in dozens of books and includes the lesser hiked areas in the deserts of southern Nevada and California.

Andy Zdon has done a very thorough job researching the approaches and hiking/climbing routes in this guide book. I especially liked the fact that he warns the reader against taking passenger cars up roads which he feels require 4WD capability. The inclusion of general area maps and actual photographs make the book even more useful. Descriptions are great but someone said "a picture is worth a thousand words". Included in the descriptions are such useful topics as the anticipated round trip elevation gain and hiking distance. In some instances Andy has added his personal comments regarding safety issue or things like "don't underestimate the difficulty of this hike". The personal touch gives the guide book user more of a "hands on" feel to the overall hike. I recommend Desert Summits to all of those folks who are planning to get out and hike/climb the areas described in the book. Hey, here's another "list" to get you out of the house this winter.

Although I'm waiting try the new hikes detailed in this book (I'll wait till summer passes, thanks), I have found it to be a great read on its own merits. The physical descriptions of the areas covered are detailed and evocative without being flowery; the driving and trail directions are as exact as they can be given the remoteness of some of these areas. Mr. Zdon knows these places inside and out, and he goes well beyond the obvious choices into some wild and relatively unexplored terrain. This book introduced me to some new places I want to experience, and made me realize I don't know my "familiar" spots as well as I thought. The volume is also very handsomely illustrated and produced.
