This is good reference book for healthcare providers who dx and treat people with Herpes 2 (HSV2). I diagnose at least 2-3 new cases of HSV2 a week. My patients feel devastated by this initial diagnosis. My main resource is the CDC STD Tx Guidelines 2010 that provides the gold standard for medical/clinical treatment recommendations. I was looking for a resource that presented living with HSV on a more personal/emotional level. This book present the clinical and the emotional sides living with HSV2. I highly recommend this book to all health care providers and their patients.

A lot of information -- learned a lot!

Excellent resource. Clears up a lot of misconceptions and fears. I bought it for a loved one who has yet to read it but hopefully will some day.

It explained a lot of things my Dr. didnt and helped me see that this isnt as bad as i initially thougt.

The one and only reference for the everyday person. Good information. Good book to keep as a reference book.

Very helpful! Could use a more recent up date.

The book is written in a style that is easy to understand. The material allows for the reader to comprehend how to better manage this lifelong affliction.

Very informative, well written, makes one feel he can cope with this issue and find happiness in his life. Great book to give to a loved one

This is a short, useful book with the occasional clever line or interesting anecdote to help you start preparing for your pilgrimage. Though the information could be found in forums or blogs, here it is gathered together for an easy read. A lot of the information is basic preparation for people who have never done or researched a long-distance hike before. If this is you, this book is for you, just don't buy the paperback like I did. Buy the cheaper kindle version.I do have one problem with the suggestions in this book. I have not hiked The Way before, but I disagree with the author's recommendation for footwear. Hiking boots are heavy! There are many who believe that the support that they provide actually increase the chance of injury from a fall because they restrict natural movement. Also, waterproof shoes never stay dry. They hold in water and sweat, then take forever to dry. This is why people who thru hike places like Pacific Crest Trail tend to wear trail runners now. These running shoes grip well, breathe, dry somewhat quickly, and are super light. The downside is that trail runners don't last as long, but they should last longer than the 780km of The French Way. Perhaps this form of shoe wear is just not popular in Europe yet or at the time the book was written (published in 2013). I'm currently deciding between trail runners and broken in hiking sandals for my walk this summer. This is just my opinion, as the saying goes "hike your own hike."Overall, I recommend that future pilgrims read this. Buen Camino!Update:I noticed on my Camino that most Americans under 30 were wearing trail runners, and were quite happy with them. My feet were happiest with socks and sandals. A great look I know, but hey I'm happy when my feet are happy. I suggest reading the book still. It was useful in prepping for my Camino, just remember to listen to your body and enjoy the journey.

I found this book to be easy to read and I liked the format. If you have never backpacked, you will find it very useful. If you are an experienced backpacker and traveler, you probably don't need this book.I agreed with the writer on packing light, but we differed on a few subjects. I found my headlamp to be very useful for packing my stuff. Some pilgrims don't arise till late and it's nice to pack up without turning on the overhead light. Also, do pack a LITTLE emergency food, especially for day 1 if you are going from St. Jean to Rosensvalles. It's a long day and starting out with some snacks is a great idea, as, yes, there ARE stores in Spain, but there are some long stretches without any stores.

Yates and Hnatiuk's guide, Pilgrim Tips & Packing List Camino de Santiago: What you need to know beforehand, what you need to take, and what you can leave at home., is very helpful, practical, and down-to-earth. It is not, technically, a guide to the Camino. It does not suggest routes, or recommend facilities, or give distances and altitudes. Rather this is the guide you need to prepare for the trip. Read this when you're ready to start buying equipment and before you pack for the trip. The authors walk you through equipment choices, always stressing the desirability of minimizing the weight you carry in your backpack, and encouraging the potential pilgrim to simplify. They also address common concerns about such topics as vicious dogs (don't worry about them!), sleeping in the refugios (take earplugs), what to wear, what to pack, how to pack, and other advice about practical matters. The authors have walked the Camino multiple times, as well as done volunteer work with pilgrims. It's very clear that they know whereof they speak in this book - you really get expert advice. The authors have a sense of humor about the Camino that is refreshing. I particularly enjoyed observations like the following: Here it is advisable to let common sense, the least common of all senses, reign. They also provide a number of interesting, amusing, and illustrative anecdotes about pilgrims. The book is also a great reference guide. Rather than include quickly outdated information, it provides an extensive appendix of useful web sites. Recommended!

I found this guide very helpful because it addresses how to pack, how to choose a backpack, footwear, clothing, and all the other items that will be necessary for the Camino de Santiago. It answers many questions that new folks that want to walk The Way would have, like myself. This is not a guide that will show you which route to take, there are many, or what the mileage is between stages but a more practical guide of "how-to" do the essentials, prepare the items that you will need, and what to expect as you walk. Myths are dispelled and a common sense approach is used throughout the book. I love the little anecdotes from other peregrinos (pilgrims) that are sprinkled though the book. It helps to drive the point home to use common sense and pack light. You could find this information in the many forums that are out there but this book makes it so easy to get that same information that I wish I would have had it when I first started researching. It would have saved me a ton of time. Do yourself a favor and buy it. It makes for a great read as it is very informative but not in a dry manner, as sometimes guides can be. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to do their own Camino de Santiago.

reading for the second time.S.Yates has great insight and a honest concern for those with honest questions about walking across Spain.if after reading her book you still have questions, just ask on her forum.she will answer.if you are thinking of doing ANY overnight hiking, anywhere, READ HER BOOK.

Thanks for your comprehensive information and adviceThe book is a great service for the understanding and preparation for the CaminoBeing a novice peregrine ( 5 Camino ) I appreciate very much you knowledge and support for the future peregrinesAgain thank you and Good Bless you

Mazzucato has written a timely book in an age in which economists and the public alike seem too often to confuse wealth with value. We once understood price as a reasonable gauge for value, but not anymore. In modern capitalism and globalisation, value can be faked. As a result, we often do not see the difference between people and things that create value and those that extract value. What do financial people do when they move assets from one place to another? Are they creating value or just extracting value? In classical economics, ‘value’ is the result of productive activities. In earlier versions of economic thought, we have Adam Smith’s theory of value based on the productivity of labour. In modern times, there are sectors that do not produce anything except moving existing assets around instead of creating new assets. It is now assumed that anything that has a price has value. How do we verify the claims by large financial institutions that their employees are the most productive in the world? How do we value their productivity when no new assets had been created by them? The conflation between productivity and value is the illusion Mazzucato seeks to dispel in this book. Mazzucato is in no doubt that the financial sector extracts value, and she discusses how it does this. In the chapter, ‘The Rise of Casino Capitalism’, she explains how extraction is done by the insertion of a wedge, namely, a ‘transaction cost’ between the providers and the receivers of finance. They also achieved through monopoly power, and lastly, through high charges relative to risks run, especially in fund management. In the case of economic downturns, what should be done? Should the government intervene, and if so, in small parts or in major moves? Or should the government keep out and leave it entirely to market forces? The author seems to support the Keynesian method of controlled intervention. Some economists argue otherwise, but Mazzucato’s arguments in the chapter, ‘Undervaluing the Public Sector’ is persuasive. Mazzucato examines the current history of economic activities and the impact of technology. In understanding the idea of value, we can better understand the distribution of income among different sectors of society. It is a fascinating book that is a joy to read because it covers economics, including its technical and historical aspects, lucidly for the layman. It takes us through the history of economics and the way ‘value’ had been defined and used, to the rise of the financial colossuses, and how they changed the idea of value and the impact that has made. She discusses the difference between creating value and extracting value, and the role of the government in stabilising the economy when takers (those who extract value) disrupt the economy create false value against the real value of the makers (people who produce value). Mazzucato invites us to determine what sort of economy do we want? In so doing, she explains what markets are and how they can shape the economy – so that we can shape the markets. Technology propels us so rapidly that in the end, we may have reached the end – unless we take control and create an economy that is sustainable not just for markets, not just for takers, not just for ourselves, but for the planet.

Mazzucato is one of the most interesting economists working today. I say this because her project in the last two books focus on a ground-up redetermination of what is important in the economy. To someone like me, who is interested in the social generation and distribution of resources but who think that policy makers went the wrong way in recent years (especially before 2008, see Bernanke to Friedman: “Let me end my talk by abusing slightly my status as an official representative of the Federal Reserve. I would like to say to Milton and Anna: Regarding the Great Depression. You're right, we did it. We're very sorry. But thanks to you, we won't do it again. “) this book is just catnip. So much catnip that I stayed up too late a couple of nights in a row reading it.Mazzucato, in this book, looks at where value was theoretically derived historically from the physiocrats to Smith through Marx and into the marginal revolution. She focuses the critique on the marginalists and the composition of current GDP about how it focus to much on the market – how what has a price has value and nothing else. For Mazzucato, this sidelines non-market institutions like the government which are long-term value creators but left out of market considerations because what they do doesn’t have a price. It is a compelling argument to look at how we analyze “the economy” in a different light.

I bought this book because I read the entrepreneurial state. This book in my opinion in a very easy to understand way for non-economists argues that we have to return to a much more basic question - the question of value creation, what is it and what is it not?The book starts with a theory historical perspective that are incredible easy to understand on how value have been conceptualized. This theory perspective gives a clear guideline to the different perspectives and the development towards a subjective understanding of value and what problems that rises. In particular the consistent discussion of rent seeking or value extraction is important - even though it might for some readers at first glance will be seen as a finance and neoliberal ideology bashing, it works by closer consideration as a tool to positive start a discussion of what value creation really means.By going this way the author succeed in forcing us to reconsider our everyday concepts of the state, and in particular its role in creating long term value and prosperity. Inevitable it comes to question and ask questions of how to define and understand the value of the common good, growth, innovation and entrepreneurship. From a more organizational and sociological perspective she forces us to consider how we run private business, how we extract value from the business both in terms of distribution (top versus other stakeholders). It forces anyone working in business to think if we are just rent-seekers or we actually create some value for all stakeholders.I find this book very helpful to think about politics, economy, sociology and organizational science.

I recently read Karen Surina Mulford's Trailblazers: Twenty Amazing Western Women (Great American Women Series) which provided brief biographical sketches of the lives of twenty women of the American West. Regrettably, more than half I had never heard of before. And one was Mary Hunter Austin. Mulford's sketch contained profuse praise for Austin's classic historical, environmental and ethnological work, "The Land of Little Rain." The work is a result of Austin's insatiable curiosity and keen observations made during almost two decades of life in Independence, California, which is still a very small town of under a 1000 people. It is located in the Owens Valley, and lies between the mountains of the Sierra Nevada, and the very lowlands of Death Valley. As the title implies, it doesn't rain much there.Austin's work was first published in 1903, and Penguin deserves kudos for keeping it in print. In part, it recalls the naturalist observations of Thoreau's Walden, but in a desert setting. She doesn't really say how she does it, or in what company, if any, but it was obvious that she did substantial hiking, long before the days of well-marked trails (or accurate weather forecasts). Thus we learn of the "streets of the mountains" written before the advent of the motor car. Her vocabulary is rich and dense, with the names of the plants and animals... and I did wonder how she learned them, prior to guide books. I still have difficulty knowing what a clematis is; it was simply different paths of knowledge in those pre-electronic days.Of the 14 essays, several are devoted to the human inhabitants of this area. There were two impressive ones on the American Indians. It was tough to be a "medicine man" in the Paiutes tribe. If three patients died, the "medicine man" would be executed. The very real paperwork travails of modern day doctors pale into insignificance by comparison. In her essay entitled "The Basket Maker" Austin described how Seyavi, of the Paiutes, made baskets that were so tight that one could cook in them... by dropping in heated rocks. Another excellent essay, "The Pocket Hunter" was on one of the (white) miners/prospectors that provided the initial impetus for the settlement of California. The "pocket" being the "sweet spot" in an ore vein that contained the most concentrated amount of the mineral sought.A few of her thoughts that resonated: she was into the "travel light" mode before it was popularized - "And here is a hint if you would attempt the stateliest approaches; travel light, and as much as possible live off the land. Mulligatwany soup and tinned lobster will not bring you the favor of the woodlanders." Observing the natural world: "What one has to get used to in flowers at high altitudes is he bleaching of the sun. Hardly do they hold their virgin color for a day, and this early fading before their function is performed gives them a pitiful appearance not according with their hardihood." In terms of settling the often contentious battles over water "rights," Austin reaches back to the classics: "Jesus Montana...walked into five of Judson's bullets and his eternal possession on the same occasion. That was the Homeric age of settlement and passed into tradition."Today the small village of Independence is just a spot on US 385 through which so many residents of Los Angeles have to slow down a bit in, as they race up towards Mammoth Lakes, the Muir Wilderness and the "back door" to Yosemite, and such more "scenic" places. A read of Austin's classic work might convince the traveler that they had arrived at their destination before they reached the more "scenic" ones. 5-stars.

...you cannot go so far that life and death are not before you." Short, poignant book with descriptive phrases about a region I sorely want to visit one day, but absent the wonderful illustrations by E Boyd Smith that helped bring this book to life. Happy enough to own this portable copy on my kindle tho can also be read online free of charge with illustrations included by doing a title search preceded by the word "archive". Good book and I did enjoy.

Neither of the boxes labeled "Predictable', "Some twists" and "Full of surprises" is applicable to this book. There is no plot, therefore no development. The book, written in the early 1900's, is a love poem of the deserts and mountains of the West--the "Land of Little Rain". It is a beautiful, poetic description of the land, flora, fauna, and people of the region in which Mrs. Austin lived and traveled. The places are fictitious, and probably the people, but this does not detract from the beauty of the descriptions, the love of the land she exudes, or the love and respect of the people she knew and met. A wonderful love-song to the land, animals, plants and people and to a time gone by. If you have ever visited such regions of the West, it will mean even more.+

I read this because of its positive reviews and a personal interest in natural history. It can take a while to get into the book, written in an archaic and sometimes convoluted style. (The excellent preface prepares you for this.) Once you learn to ride the waves and rhythms of her writing, she introduces you to the depth of what we would now call "the ecosystem."The author is a brilliant observer of nature, and the parade of essays in this book introduces you the varieties of flora and fauna found in the late 19th Century in the southern Central California and lower eastern Sierra Nevada regions. Also of interest is her experience of the native peoples of the area. A good read.

The language was a little too archaic for my taste and the author seems to have gone to great lengths to obscure the locations she writes about in her essays. Still there were at least some of her descriptions/scenes that rang true if one is interested in the western US at the beginning of the 20th century. It doesn't take long to read.

If you love California history and natural history, particularly of dry places (of which Wright Morris wrote so beautifully, "where men [and women)begin to dream...") you will love this little gem.I purchased it on a whim after hearing about Mary Austin, its author. The edition I read was dated 1971 and never mentioned that the book was actually written in 1903. Mary Austin, a magical writer and keen observer, was then apparently one of the denizens of a tiny, now vanished settlement called Kearsarge in the Owens Valley, and the book is a beautifully written portrait of that place on the edge of the desert on the eastern side of the California's southernish Sierras. With great love, poetry, and intimate first-hand knowledge and lore she explores the terrain of the mountain foot and desert, the web of nature around her, the remnant survival of the Paiute Indians and their ways, the anglo-ish citizenry of the area (mostly lonesome or hermit silver prospectors), the Mexican-American community as well, and how life goes on in a place where life was and basically never will be easy until American "civilization" destroys it.

Found a reference to this book in the book Pilgrims to the Wild....ordered this little gem published in 1903...14 short sketches,,,book is only 75 pages..the prose is wonderful, Austin writes like writers are suppose to write,,,the book is to be savored not crashed through...

Informative, good illustrations, just kind of long for the age group I was hoping to emgage.

A good telling of a historic event. Worth buying just for the art work. Jon Van Zyle is one of my favorites

My nephew loved this. I gave it to him for Christmas along with a stuffed animal husky which I also bought on Amazon and it made a great gift! I felt good giving him a book that was educational along with a toy. He's 7.

Easy read; written for children but has the true story surrounding the diphtheria epidemic in Nome. Contains the names of the mushers who participated in the dog sled run from Nenana to Nome as well as their portion of the trail.

Wonderful adventure story! Granddaughter loves it!

Great book with great artwork. Great for 3rd-4th grade reading level.

This was a very good rendition of the serum race of 1925 to save hundreds of people, especially children, from dying of diptheria. I recommend the book, especially for children. Pat Harris

This book took me back to about 5 year's time. At the age of 16, I was obsessed with the real life story of Balto. The Great Serum Race is a piece of American History that is seldom taught in history books today, and it is a marvelous tale of true sacrifice.Miller's re-telling of this great piece of American history is painted to life with Van Zyle's breathtaking paintings, and an accurate portrayal of the events of that great winter of 1925.It was a book I held dear to, and kept checking out of the library at the age of 16, because of the fact that it inspired me and motivated me as a child to want to become something. 5 years later, this American Tale still inspires me to do what I do best. When I received the book, it was brand new. It had a refreshing smell to it, and it brought me back to my past.I highly recommend this read to anyone interested in a lost piece of American History.
