In ‘Confronting Capitalism’, the Master Marketer has aggregated many facts and figures that present quite an indictment of many aspects of capitalism that most of us in the Western world have held dear. In fact, the USA is presented as quite a scary place to live. Whether we talk the right to bear arms (the urgent need for gun laws), the paucity of retirement funds, poverty levels, racial discrimination, non-maintenance of infrastructure, poor business governance, self-interest driven politicians, weak education system, household and government indebtedness and other matters, we are left with the view that there is a better road to travel in life. I’m afraid that the solutions do not readily jump off the pages. I am left wondering if democracy itself is at risk.As one might expect, the book is well-written and as easy to follow as a fireside chat.

In the interest of disclosure Phil was my professor, mentor, and then colleague at Northwestern University. Having now read the book twice, something I could never do with an ordinary economics book, and having read other reviews about the magnitude of the challenges, I am prompted to now engage on a micro level. Washington has given us the “best government money can buy” but not at my local level. A city nearby has raised public employee minimum wages to $12.50 and I need to reach out and praise them for a good start. A next step is to award contracts on the same basis.I need to tell my local Wal-Mart manager that paying such low wages creates an environment of surly workers that ruins my shopping experience. Instead I go to Publix where employees are also shareholders and can afford to shop where they work. Publix understands the value of a lifetime customer.Phil has reminded me that the challenges are daunting, the solutions on a macro level difficult, but actions where I am closest to the businesses and elected officials are not so tough. Many of Phil’s positions and solutions apply equally, albeit on a smaller scale, to what can be done locally. I hope this does not come off as overly simple but I am compelled to act.

Critics of capitalism are many. Most are long on whining about the evils of the system but short on suggesting effective solutions. Here comes highly qualified Philip Kotler and presents 14 major problems of capitalism. He does this without droning on, and with easy to follow and clearly understandable concepts and language – no jargon, no equations. Most refreshingly, he also identifies possible solutions to each of the 14 problems. This compact and focused book can serve as a handbook for starting a long overdue conversation about who we are, what we aim for, and how we can overcome the shortcomings of the system that is supposed to bring about the economic well-being of all our population, but often fails to do so. Reflective of its author, it is a hopeful and uplifting book not only for Americans, but people around the globe who face or will be facing these same problems. With this clear guide we can cut through the complexities and all participate in the discussion.

Talking about capitalism is not easy. Because it is an economic system associated with a type of political system called democracy. As the practice of capitalism changes over time, so does the nature of democracy. The change can be in either direction: positive or negative. This book does a wonderful job in bringing that relationship to the surface.

Kotler's book is not an anti-capitalist screed or polemic. This is an accessible summary of the flaws that have crept into modern capitalism and threaten to upend it.While many books that follow this line suggest that capitalism ought to be done away with it severely restrained, Philip Kotler offers 14 specific ways that our economic system needs help and ends as an unabashed fan who believes capitalism has done more good than harm, but, and it's a big but, time is not on our side.

Finally a book that bridges the divide between hard line right and left combatants.Kotler understands why the nation is divided. Unregulated capitalism will eventually lead toits own destruction unless it takes into greater account the plight of the losers in this Darwinian battle for survival.Smarter, more thoughtful historians and economists, have to gain more political power to reverse what happensto oligarchical nations that can't see the gathering storm of dangerous discontent. It should be required reading for everyone elected or desiring to be an elected official. The time has come for scholars like Kotler to cool down the rhetoric and expose the dangers that lie along the road we are traveling.Great job.

I've learned more about my own country's financial systems and reflected more on the intricacies of it than I would have ever imagined I'd do in a lifetime. This book is absolutely intriguing. Mr. Kotler writes very well and the book opened my mind to mind-bending perspectives. I also recommend his other book with John A Caslione "Chaotics." Genius. Truly genius.

The beginning is filled with a perspective on where we were & how we got there. The middle & end are filled with naive & unrealistic solutions to the worlds problems. I would read this for the background discussion not for the solutions.

Review

"Devotion is short enough to devour at one enjoyable sitting and thought-provoking enough to deserve re-reading . . . It's a privilege to spend any time with Patti Smith, however brief."—Suzi Feay, Financial Times“A triptych of compact, heartfelt essays on discovery, solitude and writing.”—Darragh McManus, Irish Independent"By turns allegorical, metaphysical, fictional and factual, Devotion shows rather than tells what it means to give a life to writing. A master of poetic innovation, Smith takes her style to the next level in this slim volume."—Katherine Cooper, Hyperallergic“Smith, a contemplative writer of gratitude and reverence, . . . deepens her inquiry into the nature of inspiration in this slender, trenchant volume. . . . Gracefully improvisational, as always, Smith offers an unusually poetic, mystical, and transfixing perspective on the mystery of literary creation.”—Donna Seaman, Booklist"The lesson is obvious: that a writer draws on every detail of his or her life for the alchemical, often unconscious process of creation. But seeing the process in action is a profound experience. Smith’s writing in the essays is as beautifully structured as her poetry."—Publishers Weekly“Smith is telling it her way, but also in the ancient way. It’s recognizable to readers for its mythic proportion, accessible to all kinds of people for its brevity and intensity—and yet, it’s still distinctly Patti Smith.”—Megan Volpert, PopMatters"This is what is so astonishing about [Smith's] career and what motivates Devotion — the way that, as she has gotten older, Smith’s vision has expanded, framing her self-awareness not as self-absorption but rather a deep dive into everything, the exhilaration and the terror and the transcendence that we all share."—David Ulin, Barnes & Noble Review"A creative, graceful and uncommonly beautiful little book about writing from the poet and singer who has, in maturity, become an even richer and more complex artist than she was at her greatest fame. She has become one of the most compelling writers of prose that we have and one of the most arresting about artists and other writers. Follow her here as she deals with Camus, Nabokov, Mishima, Genet, Simone Weil, and Patrick Modiano. Originally delivered as a series of lectures at Yale and artfully illustrated for this edition, this, in book form, is as exquisite as anything published in this season. In her late-life self discovery as a prose master, Patti Smith may have found yet another masterful voice."—Jeff Simon, Buffalo News"Packed with enough passion and contagious energy to move readers to tune into their own inspirations and—whatever their medium—get to work."—Kelsey J. Waite, AV Club"In Devotion, [Smith] starkly shares and uncovers, through a spare, haunting prose, the reasons she is compelled to write; so evocative is Smith’s writing that we’re compelled to read it as her voices transfixes us with its bell-like clarity and ringing passion."—Henry Carrigan, No Depression: The Journal of Roots Music"An enchanting peek into the mysterious ways of creativity, as Smith immerses in her beloved French literary classics and cites the everyday encounters that can spark inspiration."—Brian McCollum, Detroit Free Press"This is what Smith does to her devoted readers — she provokes memory, isolation, and the desire to make something out of the mundane. . . . Devotion, though a departure from her previous books, does not deviate from Smith’s remarkable gift."—Jerilyn Jordan, Detroit Metro Times"Through her lyrical and mystical style, Smith gracefully shares her perspective on the mystery of literary creation."—New York Spaces

Originally part of a lecture series, this slight book is probably my favorite by Patti Smith and I've read them all. Set up in three sections the first and third are very similar to M Train. We follow Ms. Smith as she goes about her day; drinking coffee, ruminating, taking photographs, and writing in her notebook. In the second part of the book we are treated to a short story by Patti Smith. What I think this book is about is the process in which we create. If you read carefully, you will see Patti Smith going about her day and find those details scattered through out the short story. She is showing us how an artist takes life and distills it into a work of art. I loved this book, I was only sad that it ended so quickly. I hope that Patti Smith publishes more fiction, I certainly enjoyed it.

Patti Smith latest publication, Devotion, is a deceptively simple volume containing a short story bookended by accounts of her travels and experiences surrounding the writing of the short story. The short story itself is fine and demonstrates just how far Smith's command of this kind of prose writing has developed since her first tentative attempts at it in her 1978 volume Babel. But the real import of Devotion occurs in the two bookended chapters in which Smith shows how seemingly unrelated day-to-day events in her life fueled the process of creation and led to something new and different. Her point being that inspiration can come from anywhere if you remain open to it.Devotion is the third book Smith has published this decade and the three works form an interesting progression in her work. Just Kids, her 2010 reminiscence of her life in New York with Robert Mapplethorpe, was a linear account with a tremendous forward momentum. 2015's M-Train kept the memoir format but deviated from Just Kids by playing with the concept of how we experience events in time. The story in M-Train is not linear but instead moves backward and forward in time. Devotion picks up where M-Train left off in the two bookends but moves in an entirely different direction by including a short story. One wonders if Smith's next published volume will use the latest innovation -- the short story -- as a launch pad for yet another new, creative direction.

i love every book patti smith has presented to our world. this book was not what i was "expecting" and so it took me a few beats to shift gears and step into the book as she had intended. now that i've given the book four stars, i am debating on giving it five stars because, really, she definitely delivered me right back into her world, a place i so enjoy experiencing. but i give five stars to her other books and this book is just a touch less than her other books. so i'll stay with the four stars.

An unassuming little book that offers profound insights into the nature of creative identity. Smith takes the reader on a journey through the pages of her own notebooks as she explores, and ultimately, decides, “Why I Write.” Classic Patti Smith in its willingness to expose the artist as the creative genius that she is and to allow the reader a glimpse into that genius.

I have read Just Friends, Woolgathering and M Train and really appreciated Patty Smith's writing, her insight, self-knowledge, experiences that shaped her, the mystery still there in the story of her life but this book did not measure up to the previous books. I was puzzled by the short story included in the book - it was a bit of a bodice ripper, not my normal reading preference. I will try reading it again and see if I can draw something more from it or see if I missed the whole point; it is a short book so that will not be a task. I feel badly that I could not praise this book as much as the others.

Patti Smith is so well read, so thoughtful, so perceptive. I have loved her other books, so this was a real disappointment to me. I suspect she accepted an assignment to contribute to the Yale Why I Write Series and then couldn't come up with anything. With a deadline approaching she wrote this rather silly and stilted micro story. A sample of the weirdly flowery yet simplistic text: "My mother's sister was beautiful; how else could she win a man so kind? He indulged her moods, and was moved by her uncomplicated delight with each new gift. . . . I excelled in school yet nothing before skating gave me the tools to express the inexpressible." It's like she's trying to sound like Tolstoy maybe? Or perhaps Rimbaud, who makes an appearance. Ordinarily she ties these little threads up so beautifully - in other books she happens upon an artist's grave and this propels her to some interesting insight or adventure - but this time it feels forced and it's a shame. She is capable of so much better, and I wish she'd given herself the time or space necessary to deliver it.

This is a short book about her stay in Europe, meeting her publisher and some old friends, and exploring some special sites of interest. I actually had never realized how well-read and grounded in literature Smith is; this is an interesting little sojourn.

If you like M Train, you're in luck: A well crafted short story centers the book, sandwiched between Smith's travel narratives and thought processes regarding writing and life in general. Fans of Camus will appreciate her visit to his home in southern France. Good stuff.

Hannah's Hope by Jennifer Saake is a book for women who have suffered from infertility, miscarriage or adoption loss. Many women long to have a first or another child in their arms. However, months can turn into years and years of trying to bring a child into the world without success. Many women question God's wisdom in not answering their prayers for a child.Saake explains to women that God answers prayers in many different ways, and that no prayer goes unanswered.Women at any stage of the infertility process could benefit from this book. Each chapter provides scripture, personal stories and a warm touch to wipe away the tears.DISCLAIMER: I received this book free from the publisher through the NavPress book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

I don't know if I'll ever have children. This book has given me the gift of seeking and finding the Lord's peace in the midst of my hurt and suffering. What seems so easy for other women seems like a mountain to me. The mountain is bitterness. This book has helped me feel more at peace because I have sought Jesus as a result. Salvation and a relationship with Christ is the treasure trove of this life. I am learning to be content and grateful through this trial. Thank you sister Jennifer.

If you or someone you love is struggling with infertility, miscarriage, or adoption loss, this book is a must-have. The author has experienced all three, and weaves the story of Hannah in with her own journey. I have never read a book that I could relate to so much. And if you are the "burden bearer" for someone who is suffering, each chapter has a special section for those who are supporting someone in these trials. It has brought me so much comfort, I can't recommend this book enough.

Since we began this new leg in our journey, I've been reading everything infertility related that I can get my hands on. The first full length book I've read dedicated exclusively to this subject is Hannah's Hope: Seeking God's Heart In The Midst Of Infertility.Hannah's Hope is written by Jennifer Saake, mother to two living children. She and her husband have walked the road of infertility for 15 years and they have had their hearts broken by several miscarriages and even more failed adoptions. The book is appropriate for women at any stage of infertility, though she writes mostly for a general audience and less for specific problems within infertility. The structure of each chapter of Ms. Saake's book is a passage (usually a single verse) of scripture, a historical fiction retelling of Hannah's story (the mother of Samuel), Ms. Saake's writings on the subject of the chapter, probing questions on the subject at hand, a list of scriptures for meditation, and a passage (never more than a page) written to the loved ones of people struggling with infertility, designed to give the loved ones special insights and ways to support their friend or family member. One thing I appreciate about Ms. Saake's book is her conversational tone. The book is a very easy read, and Ms. Saake's pen flows as easily and comfortably as I imagine her tongue would if she were sitting with you having a cup of coffee. Throughout the reading, I felt as if I were sitting across the table from a friend as she shared some of her innermost thoughts. This put me at ease to explore my own thoughts, agreeing with her in most cases, disagreeing with her in others, and overall deepening my intentional thoughts on our own journey. The historical fiction retelling of Hannah's story from I Samuel 1 is designed to explore the thoughts Hannah (and occasionally some of the other main characters) may have had as she grieved her way through her own infertility journey. Through the process, the reader develops a kinship with the biblical heroine, taking comfort in the fact that though she lived thousands of years ago, her struggle was largely the same as that of a woman today and is not unknown to the heart of God.As Ms. Saake divulges her own history and feelings, the reader is taken on a journey through exploring anger, jealousy, fear, bitterness, grief, disappointment, stress, hope, and intimacy with the Almighty. She tackles issues from fear, to bioethics, to the strength of the marital relationship, and most importantly, the infertile couple's walk with God. She is sensitive and gentle while still bold with her convictions. There is no false piety at all in Ms. Saake. Everything is brutally honest yet still respectful of the sovereignty of God. On more than one occasion, I felt like I was reading my own thoughts simply penned by Ms. Saake's hand. There was comfort and validation in "aha! someone else has felt this way too!"Ms. Saake does not dwell in the depths of her feelings. She provides thoughtful scriptural encouragement while at the same time refraining from giving pat answers and comfort cliches. She adds her own thoughts and insights as revealed to her through meditation and experience. My favorite passage in the book reads: She [the woman at the well] sought happiness in the arms of men. Jesus provides peace that could be found in none other than Himself. I sought joy in the new life of a baby. Jesus offers New life in Himself. I wanted to know the feeling of carrying another soul inside my body. He provides the Holy Spirit to indwell me. I longed to nurse a child. Paul wrote, "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good" (1 Peter 2:2-3). I dreamed of watching my baby grow and mature. But am I ever-growing in Christ? "Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil" (Hebrews 5:13-14). I bemoaned the "bread of adversity" I felt unfairly called to taste. The Lord answers with the cross: "And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me" (Luke 22:19). I pleaded for a child to enrich my days on earth. He commands, "But store up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:20-21). p 95Ms. Saake does not promise anyone a happy ending. She admits that even though she now has two living, biological children, the scars of infertility will always leave an ache in her heart. The journey God has taken her on through this process has not been completed or nullified by the successful conception and birth of children. I would guess that this would be of special comfort to those either struggling with secondary infertility or who still feel a loss that their family is not what they imagined or hoped it would be.She exhorts the reader, While Satan imprisons some with bondage to past sins, he can entangle others in what seems to be a good and righteous goal, causing them to lose sight of God in the midst of self-evaluation. p 49That hit me as especially poignant because I've been stewing so much about this lately that I need to guard my own heart against making motherhood my idol. That is an important challenge for every mother, mother to be, or mother at heart.I found some of the "Burden Bearer" passages (written to friends and family members of infertile couples) to be helpful, and others were not of particular significance to me. I appreciated her frankness with her advice of how to support, and in some cases, how to refrain from causing more hurt, on infertile loved ones. One thing that should be noted is that the passages are to be read in conjunction with the rest of the book and are not intended to be read independently. My primary critique of the book is that each chapter is very brief. Just when I thought "ok, we're tackling something I'm really struggling with," Ms. Saake moves on to another subject. I longed for her to exegete the scriptural passages she offered and share more details on the HOWS of her journey and the conclusions she's made. I don't think that this is a flaw, per say, because I don't think it was ever the author's intent to give an exhaustive chronicle of infertility and so I cannot blame her for not writing as if it were. This was simply was more of a disappointment--I longed to delve deeper with my new found friend in to emotions that are for me, still raw and in need of exploration. The approach is just a matter of personal preference and I'm sure for as many as there are of women like me who longed for more depth, there are equally many women who appreciated the brevity. However, the ease of the flow of the book makes this a very excellent, easily accessible and processed resource for pastors, ministerial staff and anyone else truly interested in learning an "insider's perspective" on infertility. One of my very favorite chapters in the book was on how the church could help break its own silence on this matter and offer comfort to those in their congregations who are burdened with this grief. I only wish it were longer!Overall, my impression of the book is very positive. I would heartily recommend it to anyone at any stage in their infertility journey. I also recommend it as a must-have resource for any pastor. I do recommend it for loved ones of the infertile, with the disclaimer that this book is not written specifically to give you (the loved one) advice, and reading it should be done with the intention of understanding the heart of your infertile friend or family member, and not specifically equipping with you with the "how tos" of what to do as the friend (though there is some).Brava, Jennifer! A valiant, sincere, and godly effort that is very much appreciated.

I found this book after 3 harsh years of infertility in our marriage. God still hasn't given us kids since then, but this book has been invaluable in helping me uncover many perspectives in me that have stood in the way of true peace, faith, and comfort. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who faces infertility or who have family members who do so. Jennifer writes from her own heartaches but also, more importantly, from the Word of God.

My husband and I endured a period of failed fertility treatments before we decided to adopt internationally (Kazakhstan). After loving and losing two baby boys we bonded with our third baby boy and our adoption was granted in court! It was joyous! But we were blindsided when the birthmother appealed the adoption on the last day of the fifteen day waiting/appeal period. We are still fighting this out in court. This book was just what I need while enduring this fight. I struggle to remain faithful in God's plan. There are so many questions unanswered - "Why is God allowing this to happen to us???" Saake's book is the only one I have found that addresses the questions so many of us struggling to grow our families have regarding our faith. This book does not just address fertility, but miscarriage and adoption struggles as well. I HIGHLY recommend this book! It is also ideal for family and friends of those struggling with fertility or loss of a child due to miscarriage, stillbirth, or failed adoption. Every chapter has a section titled "Burden Bearer" designed just for those people looking in from the outside and wanting to support their friends and loved ones without putting their foot in their mouth! You will not regret buying this book! Thank you Jennifer Saake for writing this book for all of us walking this "road less traveled."[...]

Review

“Insightful. . . . An exhaustive and surprisingly lively account of the integral role labor has played in American life.”—The Plain Dealer“Spectacular. . . . Dray’s chronicle reads like a novel, filled with dramatic acts of barbarism and bravery.”—Maureen Corrigan’s Favorite Books of the Year, Fresh Air, NPR“Engrossing. . . . A memorable and accurate history, one that reminds us of the honorable part labor played in the quest for what its advocates grandly but not inaccurately called ‘industrial democracy.’”—The Washington Post “Ambitious. . . . It’s a big colorful tale, and Dray has a gift for characterization as he tells the stories of dramatic figures such as Mother Jones and Jimmy Hoffa, and dramas such as the Haymarket Riot and the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire.”—Chicago Tribune“One of the great values of this beautifully written book is that it shows the centrality of labor and working-class organizations to America itself. . . . Dray comes into the ring with fists flying, and he doesn’t let up for a moment. If you love Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States you’ll probably love Dray’s history, too.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Dray provides a grand context for thinking about labor-management relations in a society beset by bad will within millions of workplaces. . . . He is a refreshing chronicler of history.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune “A stirring study. . . . Packed with vivid characters and dramatic scenes, Dray’s fine recap of a neglected but vital tradition has much to say about labors current straits.”—The Washington Examiner“An exemplary history of the American labor movement, from its time-shrouded beginnings to its murky present . . . in the tradition of Eric Foner and Studs Terkel.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred)“The unending struggle between unions and big business has never been more vividly told. Philip Dray is a marvelous story teller who brings history memorably alive, and you will not soon forget the tales of murder and greed, commitment and sacrifice, that fill these pages. But this is more than history; the compelling saga of labor as a crucible for social change should prompt some honest and hard debate about what’s happening to working men and women today.”—Bill Moyers “Sobering. . . . This unusually interesting book delivers on the promise of its subtitle. . . . [Dray] offers a balanced and comprehensive coverage of a force for American progress that is now in danger of becoming a relic of our storied past.”—America Magazine “Philip Dray’s big and bold history of organized labor in America splendidly retells a story—or a multitude of stories—badly in need of retelling. The labor movement’s decline in recent decades has accompanied a great national amnesia about all that the movement achieved for the nation. That amnesia threatens those achievements, so Dray’s book is timely as well as gripping.”—Sean Wilentz, author of The Rise of American Democracy"Any union leader working to define and strengthen the role of organized labor in the 21st century must read There Is Power in a Union, a comprehensive and fascinating history of the American labor movement."—Michael Winship, President, Writers Guild of America, East (AFL-CIO)"The American labor movement has been losing ground for three decades but its history is heroic and inspiring - full of scenes of dramatic, often bloody conflict. It would be hard to imagine a better account of those episodes of collective effort, personal courage, and fierce resistance than this engrossing narrative."—Morris Dickstein, author of Dancing in the Dark: A Cultural History of the Great Depression"From the Lowell Mills of antebellum America to the global assembly lines of our own day, Philip Dray offers a panoramic narrative of the work and struggle, the triumph and tragedy, that has been the fate of trade unionism in the United States. His lively and insightful history belongs on the shelf and in the hands of all those who want to organize ourselves out of the social and economic predicament in which the nation now finds itself."—Nelson Lichtenstein, Professor of History and Director of the Center for the Study of Work, Labor, and Democracy at the University of California, Santa Barbara

Philip Dray's book is a series of stories of the larger-than-life leaders of the labor movement, and he tells those stories convincingly and stirringly, without speculating outside the historical record. I found the book very readable and even a page-turner. There are a couple limitations to be aware of, but they won't bother everyone. First, Mr. Dray is unabashedly pro-union. Even those who share his sympathies may be bothered by the overt way that he takes sides. For instance, in discussing the Kyoto climate-change accord, Mr. Dray reports that the UAW "cautioned the president against commitments that would unfairly hamstring the U.S. auto industry and possibly result in layoffs," whereas he describes the same position, taken by management, as the "well-oiled reaction of the corporations and their conservative handmaidens." This problem goes beyond Mr. Dray's choice of words: he almost never gives serious consideration to positions critical of unions. The second limitation to his work is that it is almost exclusively narrative. He tells exciting tales, but discusses only in passing the economic and social forces that form the backdrop for the successes and failures of the labor movement. Nevertheless, it's an engrossing book and a great story.

I got the book used and it came in good shape. I was surprised at the depth and detail the author provides. The writing style is engaging and He covers the Good the Bad and the Ugly or organized labor history. From time to time you see other social agendas tie themselves to the labor movement, sometimes the result is good and others were disastrous. A great appreciation for the early role women's leadership played in organizing labor is provided. This is a serious read almost 700 pages.

Philip Dray's powerful book lives up fully to its subtitle -The Epic Story of Labor In America. Few books move with the power and ease of "There is Power In A Union."Filled with unforgettable characters who claim monumental places in American history, Dray captures the personalities that carved the labor movement into the annals of American history. Bill Haywood, Mother Jones, Elizabeth Flynn, Albert Parsons, Joe Hill, Frank Little: some of them died, all of them made huge contributions to give American workers the benefits they have today. The unions may not be the powerful forces they once were in American history, but this book stirs up the ghosts and brings the historic battle between labor and capital back to life. I have read lots of history - few books stand up to the splendid work of this one. It is impossible to appreciate the anatomy of the labor fight in America without reading this book.

The story's amazing and this book tries hard to tell it. And that's the thing: the author tries too hard, the subject getting pounded rather than stroked. The history of organized labor in America is one that aches to be written in a way that the work becomes a bestseller, the words inspiring conversation. Here's a workman's effort that is valuable because there's so little else on the subject.

I love this book. It is full of so much fascinating, important information. I feel like it's a crime that they don't teach most of this history in grade or high school. This is important history. Really great if you've read A People's History of the US by Howard Zinn and want more on labor.Fascinating stuff on Frances Perkins, the first woman in the US cabinet, and other people and movements.I read it from the library, but loved it so much that I wanted to order myself a copy that I could keep and look back at to refresh my memory.I'm not the fastest or the slowest reader and it took me about 3 weeks to read the almost 700 pages.

A must read for anyone interested not only in Labor issues, but in the callous attitudes of employers and the courts; unfortunately they haven't changed. But the laws president Roosevelt enacted did change the working conditions FOR ALL WORKING PEOPLE, unionized or not. Those who aren't unionized are just free-riders on the monumental sacrifices by union members to give us the 40-hour work week, prohibition of child labor, safety measures in the work place, compensation and unemployment insurance, paid vacations and so much more.We take these conditions for granted today, but when Unions started to organize, the workers were treated worse than slaves. - A must read!
