I have been a practicing Buddhist since October 5th 2005 and have a bunch of books on Buddhism and this is by far the most favorite of mine for teaching the Buddha's eight fold path. This book for me supersedes sutras, Zen mind training books, and many of the Thich Nhat Hanh books that I really like because this book really lays out the plan in real life terms not just some ideals of how we should act. I keep asking people at my Sangha to review it and Zen teachers can be very head strong and set in their Zen ways and without this book I would have never really gotten on "THE PATH". It wasn't an easy read for me at first because I decided that I wasn't going to skip around and I wasn't going to glaze over the pages when I didn't understand. Every time I "failed" a chapter I started rereading again, until I "got it" then moved on to the next so it took me about 6 weeks to read. 4 -5 weeks to get through the first 2 parts of the eight fold path and then I blazed through the rest of the book in only a few days like a California wildfire. You will know a good Buddhist book when you want to read it again every few years. This is one of those books. This book is tied at number one with the Shambala Pocket Classic version of the Dhammapada which I also love because you can read the whole book in an hour and it fits in any shirt or pants pocket. I know of no other text on this planet that packs so much wisdom into such a tiny package. This book and the Dhammapada together are really all one needs to launch and create a home based Buddhist practice even without a priest around to guide you. Of course please seek out a real ORDAINED Buddhist priest from some tradition either near you or online because they will help you grow exponentially once you have gotten your Buddhist practice going. Contact the San Francisco Zen Center (or any legitimate Zen Center near you) if you need to find Buddhist guidance as they are part of one of the most famous and reputable Soto Zen organizations in the world and have many affiliate centers throughout the United States and Japan. I am a member of the Houston Zen Center and you can find us online too.

The author of this book, Bhante Gunaratana, is a phenomenal Buddhist teacher. Not only is he a wonderful author and teacher, but he "walks the walk." He has been a monk for most of his life. I have been extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend several of his retreats, and I highly recommend you check out his talks on dharmaseed.com. This is my favorite of his books. It is an extremely practical and accessible introduction to the noble 8-fold path. I plan to read it again soon.

I have read many of his other books and all I can say is that if you are interested in meditation and Buddhism, then Bhante H's books are a must. The Buddhist philosophy can become very confusing and many approach it in such an esoterical and intellectual way that it can go over your head or it feels as if you are banging your head into a wall. Bhante has the gift of writing clearly, beautifully expressing himself and at the same time making it all understandable without dummying down the content and the subject matter. This book or any of his other books are a must for anyone interested in learning more about Buddhism

This is gold. I read this book after reading Mindfulness in Plain English not thinking it could possibly surpass it, but I was pleasantly surprised. Now several months later, I find myself applying many strategies in this book. Big thanks to the author for your amazing teachings. I am forever in debt.

I have read other books on Buddhism but this one just rocks. It is so well written and so thorough that Ianyone who is reasonably intelligent should be able to understand its salient points. I have studied religionfor fifty years, and this seems to condense 95% of that material down into its moderate length. The pointsBuddha made 2500 years ago are just as relevant now as then. This is not just a feel good book. It challengesthe reader to strive for greater understanding and self control in all areas of life. This is a foundational bookthat any serious scholar or seeker should not be without.

Truly Buddhism in plain English. The author clearly instructs the reader on the path to happiness with insightful illustrations and brilliant clarity. The Eight Fold Path, meditation, and concentration are expressed with simple potency. The best book on the subject in my library - succeeding Humphreys, Goldstein, and Huber in succinctly expressing the Path.

If one wishes to read a well-written basic book on Buddhism, this is the one for you! There are so many misconceptions out there about what Buddhism is and if you really want to know about Theravada, read this well-written book.

This book is awesome. It give you inside on the Noble Eightfold Path in a modern sense. I bought three copies for my family. I recommend this book to everybody. My favorite part was "skillful thinking," and it made me realize how judgmental, pessimistic, and thoughtless I can be. I am happy to say that this book has changed my perspective on Buddhism.

This book is an amazing piece of scholarship. I've been a follower of Carolyn Phillip's blog as soon as I found it, and obsessively read her weekly Monday posts after I worked through the entire contents of her blog. (Check it out, she's just put up her latest post on eggplants, even though it's the U.S. Labor Day and directly after her book release!).Right now I'm working through the Shanghai/Yangtze region. My mom is old school Shanghainese (90+) and I'm recognizing recipes and ingredients I haven't seen in years. This is for real, stuff I haven't seen in the U.S. since I was a kid going to banquets, dinners with my parent's friends and restaurants where someone native to Shanghai was ordering. I don't even know how to order many of the dishes or buy the ingredients, and it's killing me! That being said, she's also giving subs and encouraging readers to cook it even if there are ingredients missing. Go for it. Cooking chinese is adapting yourself to whatever's available. The only comparable author I can think of is the late, great Barbara Tropp, who authored The Modern Art of Chinese Cooking. Until now, that was my definitive reference and tour on the breadth of chinese cooking through it's many regions. Carolyn Phillips' book is a step forward, with her identification of regional tastes and examples of regional dishes. Barbara Tropp didn't break out the regions and tastes as clearly or rigorously.I'll report back when I work my way through further chapters. This book is huge. I can tell I'm going to be spending a LOT of time going through this and gaining a better understanding of what's simplistically referred to as "chinese cuisine".additions : If you're fairly new to Chinese cooking, start with the intro basics section of the book. It's actually a section toward the end of the book. There are going to be some sections, especially in the glossary where some pictures for identification would've helped. Google is your friend. Stick close to PC or tablet when you're going through this section. I've been cooking chinese for 30+ years after being taught by my mom, and I'm still reading about ingredients in this book I've never even heard of. This book is almost purely recipes, so I recommend pairing it with another chinese cookbook for chinese cooking techniques if you're not familiar with them.If you're serious about your chinese food, buy a copy.I paid for a copy. Zippo influence from anyone or anything.....

This is a vast book. It is almost overwhelming in scope. And some cook book readers will want to disregard this one because it does not have pictures. I think that would be a mistake, especially for cooks who want to delve further into Chinese dishes than what they have already found in general Chinese cooking books. "All Under Heaven" introduces the reader into the intricacies of Chinese food culture regions. It is not an introduction into Chinese cooking.I think this book might be a bit overwhelming for an inexperienced cook; someone unfamiliar with Oriental ingredients. Although, if you glance through the very exemplary "Look Inside" feature on this product page, you will see that many recipes are very approachable, and ingredients readily available from a large well-stocked grocery store. If you are inexperienced, yet very interested in discovering the regional cooking of China, you will be able to tackle these recipes with gumption and determination. While a large oriental grocery store would surely be a great help, it is not mandatory for maybe a third-to-half of the recipes. If you are out in the middle of nowhere, Amazon's vast array of foodstuffs can come to your rescue. While many of the line drawings are beautiful, without even a few full-color photos, the book is a bit difficult to plow through if your intent is to just glance at the recipes and whiling away a peaceful afternoon. This is a serious book, loaded with information, and not suited for light reading. Each region is covered, but no region is really covered in depth. Each region has sub-regions, and there is a sprinkling of recipes for each. For instance, I was hoping to learn more about Hakka dishes. While there were a few recipes, I yearned for more. Hence, I call this book an "introduction" despite its 500+ pages. There is enough information on each area to whet your appetite.I've written quite a few cook book reviews, and I usually include some of my favorite dishes before I wrap it up. Not this time. This book is truly vast in scope, and I don't really have any favorites. I can say that I started with a temporary download of the book from the publisher Ten Speed Press, and today, now that Amazon has it offered for sale, I have purchased my own copy. I can say that the recipes I tried so far produced the predicted results. Now, I want to have the book for my own; to have and hold a hard copy to study it better. It is that kind of book. I bought a hard copy because I think it will be easier to manage than the Kindle version. I want to flip pages back and forth between the recipes, the decent glossary in the back, and the extensive index.Maybe it would give you some insight, if I told you that I now live in a large motor coach, and I do a lot of cooking outdoors. And I am really trying to downsize my cookbook collection, and have gone from over a thousand cook books to a single cabinet-full in the bus. And I still indulged myself with this book.....I am looking forward to really getting to know the recipes in All Under Heaven during the cooler months coming up.*I received a free, temporary download of the ARC of this book from the publishers.

This book covers just about anything you'd want to know about LINQ. The examples given are really useful. As a reader you have the option of just reading the first part of each chapter which covers a particular aspect of LINQ or diving in deep in by examining what happens at the CLR level (covered in the latter part of each chapter). LINQ to Objects, LINQ to XML and LINQ to SQL are all presented but the author goes further showing how to extend LINQ for your own custom needs. It is comprehensive enough to keep as a reference, so I got the Kindle version in order to keep it nearby at work.

Joe Mayo does a fantastic job explaining software. On every page of his books I think to myself "Oh that is how it works". Just the right depth so you can understand how to do it yourself. His books are well thought out without overlaps.

The author demonstrates an authoritative knowledge of LINQ and explains the concepts well. I also appreciate the sections where he gives more detail, for those readers who might be curious about the finer details.

The book is wriiten in simple English, which is a big plus for the book. However, the source code is unavailable, which is a big negative. If you read a programming book like a novel, then it may be ok, otherwise buy something else.

Compared to most .Net developers I am a relative novice. I don't develop in .Net full time. I'm a Java developer by day and do some consulting in .Net on nights and weekends. My experiences with .Net so far have been some basic ASP.Net web sites with SQL Server as the back end database. Most of my experience has been with Visual Studio 2008. I wanted to review this book to assist me in coming up to speed in LINQ and Visual Studio 2008. I started this will little or no exposure to LINQ. I just knew that it was a new programming tool from Microsoft to make accessing databases easier for the .Net developer. My goal from reading this book was to walk away with basic knowledge of using LINQ. Now having read the book and done the exercises that are included in it, I can say that I do have a basic understanding of how to use LINQ. I liked the fact that the author, Joe Mayo, chose to include exercises for the reader to do along with reading his book. I'm of the school that learns by doing, not by simply reading about new technologies, so this was very helpful for me in terms of understanding the concepts the author was discussing. I got through all of the exercises except one that I had trouble with. I emailed the author about my troubles and he responded the same day and informed me that I needed to install Visual Studio 2008 service pack two to get the new functionality that I need for the exercise. I thought it was very nice of him to get back to me so quickly! I did have some trouble due to my lack of experience with some of the more advanced features of the C# programming language, (partial classes and partial methods, Lambda expressions etc). None of these issues were show stoppers in getting through the material in the book. I was very impressed with the LINQ technology. You can just drag and drop a table from your database onto the page in Visual Studio and it builds a great deal of code for you. It builds the code that you will use to insert and update your data in that table. Very impressive! Microsoft has come a long way in terms of making a developer's job easier. I had a really hard time with the syntax that LINQ uses. I'm an old Oracle developer and it took me a while to get used to this SQL server way of writing queries, but LINQ queries look entirely different than what I'm used to and it is not intuitive to me. I'm used to:SELECT first_nameFROM Users WHERE last_name = `Jones' The same query in LINQ is something like:FirstNames =FROM names in UsersWHERE last_name = `Jones'SELECT first_name I'm having a really hard time with this new syntax but I will get used to it as I get more experience and it has nothing to do with the book or the author, it has to do with the technology of LINQ. I thought the book was well written and well organized. It's obvious to me the Mr. Mayo has a great deal of knowledge and experience with LINQ and .Net development in general and it shows in his book. I think this is a good book for experienced .Net developers. I think I would have gotten more out of the book if I had a little more .Net programming experience. This is not a book for a beginner in .Net, Visual Studio 2008, or Database development. There are other beginner level books more specific to those topics where beginners should go.

Joe has a blockbuster on his hands: LINQ PROGRAMMING scores big. Clear, concise examples abound throughout the book and make the transition to LINQ a no brainer. Thumbs way up! :)

I have just read the first few chapters and I have to admit this is by far the best introduction to linq I have seen. The language is so friendly and the examples so crisp and to the point and easy to understand. So if you are looking for a brief but deep introduction to linq give this book a try

With just 300+ pages, the book is loaded with code examples for different scenarios. Easy to read, no complicated details.-Review by Hoiyin Ip, OC.NET User Group member

Best work by LW and his very last work. This is the real deal, deeply insightful and poignantly concise--he's the poet of "Analytic Philosophy." I received my grad degree from a Philosophy of Language Department where studying Wittgenstein was the main event and been teaching for 25 years. However, On Certainty is not --I mean NOT a good "starter" book or introduction to Wittgenstein's work. The Blue and Brown Books or the first half of the Philosophical Investigations are good but On Certainty is not for novices. You have to work for this one and have some background. Secondary readings by Ray Monk or read about the infamous Vienna Circle. Reading about Wittgenstein is fasinating and helpful. Heck he wrote logic in the fox holes and was a war hero. Intriguing German family--he gave his tremendous wealth away to live in the Alps and teach school children. There is a rich and textured history here of one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th Century, who also influenced --was a game changer for many disciplines. Don't give him short shrift. As Wittgenstein said in the beginning of the Investigations, "I would't want to spare you the trouble of thinking"

LW's attempt to address the debate between radical skepticism and GE Moore's claim to "know" various facts with certainty. Much of the book is a quite subtle discussion of how language about knowledge, certainty, and doubt is used in practice and by philosophers. But the discussion is non-linear; it repeatedly circles back to previously-discussed issues, but with slightly different takes on the topic. This is at times illuminating, and other times frustrating.LW is said to be difficult to access and understand. I can believe it. But I also suspect this is one of his more readable books, so for someone who is interested in how LW practices philosophy, it should be a good "beginner" primary text. (N.B. The book is relatively short -- the printed edition is twice as long as it would otherwise be because of the inclusion of the original German text.)

If it's okay to talk about "favorite" philosophy books, On Certainty is on my list. I've come back to it over and over since first reading it about 30 years ago.Two themes stood out this time, maybe the two themes that I've always thought were most important.1) Distinguishing "grammatical" propositions from empirical onesIt's hard to talk about this briefly, but, roughly, "grammatical propositions", for Wittgenstein, are statements about how we speak. Elsewhere and here, he remarks on our commonly mistaking the one for the other. For example, he remarks on the physicist Eddington having "discovered" that tables (and other physical objects) aren't really solid, given that they are mostly made up of the space within and between atoms. He says that Eddington is actually proposing a change in the way that we speak, changing how we use the word "solid", rather than simply reporting an empirical observation. The line is blurry -- certainly empirical observations are relevant to the proposed change in the way we speak. Nevertheless, it is a powerful distinction. Wittgenstein is interested in correcting our tendency to be misled by such statements into some sort of false mysterious profundity, as here, in the kinds of skepticism and idealism under examination in his time. But the distinction may also be useful in more common circumstances -- what about the statement "Life begins at conception (or quickening or birth or . . . )"? Is that statement empirical, or is it more a recommendation about how we should use the word "life"? If the latter, how does that change the debate about the rightness or wrongness of abortion rights? Both sides try to lend their argument more weight by treating such a statement as an empirical one, a "fact". Likewise G.W. Bush saying that "The US doesn't torture." Did that function for him as a factual statement, or a decision about how we are going to use the word "torture"?2) The "natural history" of human beingsOn Certainty responds to Wittgenstein's reading of Moore's "common sense" papers, particularly "Proof of an External World" and "A Defense of Common Sense". Moore in turn was responding to Kant's declaration of a "scandal to philosophy" that we can't (in quasi-ordinary words) prove the existence of a world outside our minds. Moore believed he could provide such a proof. But it's really the picture behind the felt need to provide such a proof that is bothersome and important. It calls up a picture of human beings creating "knowledge" in their minds by observing and reasoning about a world "outside their minds". Wittgenstein's arguments tend toward a less intellectualized and more natural relationship between human beings and the world, something more akin to what gets called "coping" by later writers (e.g., Heidegger). We don't need to "know" or "prove" the existence of an external world, since we live in the world. In fact, the very attempt to prove its existence makes its existence questionable, now that these propositions (e.g., "There is a world external to my mind") are articulated. The compulsion to ask, now that we've articulated them, whether we know them or knew them before we articulated them, seems already to be a mistake. Such propositions weren't there before articulating them, and what they try to express didn't function as "knowledge" per se. Our situation is much more akin, as Wittgenstein says (jokes?), to a squirrel's apparent knowledge that winter will come and so he'd better store nuts against it -- squirrels don't infer that winter will come from past winters coming. Nor we do we, as Moore tries to do, establish the existence of a "world external to our minds" by inferring its existence from some more primitive facts that we know to be true.

Nature and Cities: The Ecological Imperative in Urban Design and Planning

Review

“In their new book, editors Frederick Steiner, FASLA, George Thompson, and Armando Carbonell have made complex ideas about urban ecological design incredibly accessible. They make a convincing argument that ‘ecological literacy’ is an ‘essential base’ for anyone involved in urban planning and design today. There are 17 thought-provoking essays from leading landscape architects and planners from around the world.” —DIRT Best Books of 2016 (American Society of Landscape Architects)“The beautiful photographs and lush design of Nature and Cities mask a radical and revolutionary set of ideas from some of the world’s most insightful and intelligent landscape architects and urbanists. Brilliantly curated and edited, these essays offer fresh ideas about how to integrate our understanding of the human condition and the health, vitality, and sustainability of the planet.” —Darren Walker, Ford Foundation, President“This interconnected collection of essays is a stirring manifesto for sustaining beauty and a new public works agenda based on resilient infrastructure—and a call to action for landscape architects to inform and inspire decision makers.” —Adrian Benepe, SVP and Director of City Park Development, The Trust for Public Land, and Former Commissioner, New York City Department of Parks & Recreation“Daniel Burnham famously counseled an earlier generation of landscape architects, ‘Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men’s blood. . . .’ The authors here have followed that advice; this book overflows with imaginative insights and proposals to guide the ongoing urbanization of our planet.” —Bruce Babbitt, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, 1993–2001  “This valuable collection of new essays asserts that nature and cities can no longer be posited as diametrically opposed conditions. In this critical moment of rapid global climate change and unprecedented species loss, we are ethically tasked with the creation and stewardship of equitable urban systems and productive urban landscapes that support both human and nonhuman biota.” —Catherine Seavitt Nordenson, Associate Professor, City College of New York, and Coauthor, On the Water: Palisade Bay  “Yes, lightening can strike twice. Expanding on the discourse they ignited almost 20 years ago with Ecological Planning and Design, Thompson and Steiner (joined by Carbonell) have assembled another collection of timely, illuminating, and thought-provoking essays that is essential reading for both students and professionals.”  —Charles A. Birnbaum, FASLA, FAAR, President + CEO, The Cultural Landscape Foundation  “Nature and Cities summarizes all that we have learned about how natural systems shape cities since Ian McHarg’s Design with Nature was published in 1969. It illustrates how design professionals, ecologists, and citizens can strike a new balance between human settlements and nature in designing the cities and regions of the emerging Anthropocene epoch.” —Robert Yaro, Professor of Practice, University of Pennsylvania, and President Emeritus, Regional Plan Association  “This important and beautiful book signals an exciting maturation of the linkage between ecological science and the theory and practice of urban design. The essayists represent multiple generations of urban designers and planners—both long-standing pioneers and new leaders emerging from the current generation. Their collective wisdom is masterfully synthesized by the editors’ introduction and afterword.” —Steward T.A. Pickett, Distinguished Senior Scientist and Director, Baltimore Ecosystem Study, Long-Term Ecological Research, Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies

The editors have assembled an all star cast of landscape architects, architects, and planners from both practice and the academy to address the subject of nature and cities. All of the contributors are widely published and influential--if you find their ideas compelling, it is easy to go deeper. Well produced with excellent color images, charts, and plans. Covers many scales from aesthetics and the experiential aspects of nature in cities to larger natural systems.Highly recommended,David Hopman, ASLA, PLAAssociate Professor, Landscape ArchitectThe University of Texas at Arlington

This is a book my son had requested. It was perfect and the price was right!

Heavy and big size and useless little contents. The size could be smaller and the contents could be much better. I would give it 0 stars if I can.

Terrific product. Very useful. Especially pockets for appointment cards and other small stuff like concert tickets.

I've gotten this before and love the pockets!

I've been using these calendars for about 15 years and love them. Although more notices, invitations, etc. come via email, it's still really useful to have one central calendar where everyone in the family can see what's going on, and where I can tuck in bills, etc. The reason I gave 4 rather than 5 stars is that the art is always very kitschy. I can usually find something that isn't entirely country hearts and quotes, it would be nice to have at least one calendar option that's a bit more sophisticated. But maybe that just means I'm not really their market :)

This little book if jam-packed with great information. Did you know that Athena was the favorite child of Zeus? That’s no small feat since Zeus had plenty children. Did you know that when Orpheus played his lyre, its beautiful sounds would make Hades cry tears of iron? This was all news to me, until I read this book. The perfect guide for getting to know the Greek gods and goddesses, this small book is full of bright pictures and interesting information. Don’t let the cute drawings fool you into thinking this is a “baby book.” The information about myths found in this book are more detailed than some of the stuff I have seen in some textbooks. Also in comparison to those textbooks, this book is full of bright cartoon illustrations and humor. Even the bright colors of the cover will pull the attention of readers. Something else that makes this books such a great read is its scope. If you are interested in Greek mythology and ever wondered what the myths of Egypt or Norse legends might be like, this is again, the book for you. The book not only covers the myths of Greece; it also gives equally excellent profiles of the figures found in Norse legends and Egyptian mythology. If mythology seems fun to you, this is the perfect little handbook to read for more information on the subject. If you pass this book up, you’ll regret it almost as much as Odysseus regretted blinding the cyclops Polyphemus. In other words, you will regret it…big time! This book comes highly recommended and is a helpful tool for any young students of History, Social Studies, and Mythology.

Our 6th grade daughter checked this out from the school library. She loves this book. I teach Mythology to high school students. This is a wonderful and engaging beginners book.

What better endorsement can you have when your daughter automatically wants to order another book by the same author Very easy to read, great explanations kept her hooked during the entire book

We love this series and this one is no exception. Colorful illustrations, catchy words and phrases and we love the poster

My son is a huge fan of these books. They teach a lot about their topics in a funny way for kids to understand. They come with a poster for their wall and have so many fun details.

my kids LOVE this book. Lots of great information presented in an easy and fun way. This is like a little reference book for them and they refer to it often.

A Hit!

Cute book on a children's level so they can understand mythology easily. It keeps their interest.

Freke and Gandy proclaim "Christian literalism from which nearly all forms of modern Christianity have evolved...didn't...appear until the middle of the second century" (p 25).Alas for Freke/Gandy, this is flat-out untrue. Nor can they convince anyone by pretending the Gnostic texts, dated to around 200 AD or much later, have anything to do with the epistles of Paul, dated to twenty years after the crucifixion of Christ. The facts: Paul - not to mention Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - use the words 'paradidomi' and 'paralambano'. These were technical terms, familiar to any Second Temple Jew, indicating the given statements were true, binding, religious sacred tradition. Here are some good books on the subject: "Torah in the Mouth,” "Early Text of the New Testament,” “Structuring Early Christian Memory: Jesus in Tradition, Performance and Text,” and "Jesus Remembered.”
Futhermore, intense research into Paul in the last fifty years has discovered proof of early creeds, likely dating back to the first three years after the death of Jesus. Some good books on the subject: "Lord Jesus Christ" by Hurtado and "The Earliest Christian Confessions".Guess what Freke and Gandy also get completely wrong: literalism, in the way that Freke and Gandy mean, was never part of early Christianity. It arrived with the Protestants, circa the 1500s. The Catholic church reads scripture according to the four senses of scripture, including the historical, allegorical, tropological, and the anagogical.Even the people the brilliant Freke and Gandy call 'literalists" such as Ireneaus, utilized typology. So either the perspicacious Freke and Gandy never read any of Ireneaus, or Ireneaus was simply too difficult for even their shining genius to grasp. For that matter, in the first documents by a Christian, the epistles of Paul, Paul uses typology. And no, this is not proof Paul was a Gnostic. For an explanation, here's a good book on the subject: "Typos: The Typological Interpretation of the Old Testament in the New".The nimble minds of Freke and Gandy aver that "In fact we don't hear anything about Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John until the late second century" (p 40). Actually, we have literally hundreds of quotations from the four Gospels in Clement, Ignatius, the Didache, Justin, etc., so it's perfectly clear which Gospels were known and revered by the early Christians. Absolute rock solid evidence. Good reference book on this: 'The Influence of Saint Matthew on Christian Literature before Saint Irenaeus".
Note also: Freke/Gandy craftily omit any mention of 1 Clement (95 AD) and the letters of Ignatius of Antioch (110 AD), the first being from the Bishop of Rome, and the second by the Bishop of Antioch. Both demolish Freke and Gandy's claims of orthodox Christianity only dating to the middle of the second century, since they prove the existence of orthodox bishops, orthodox doctrine, orthodox congregations, and orthodox citation of scripture, in major cities with nary a hint of Gnostic anything. They are available online if you want to look them up."By the first half of the first century there were already three ...schools of Christian Gnosticism" (p 25).Utter rubbish. Although there were some vaguely Gnostic ideas floating around, there were no Gnostic texts or schools until a century after the death of Christ, long after the orthodox Gospels and epistles were written. A good book on the subject: "A Separate God" by S. Petrement. Petrement found that Docetism preceded Gnosticism, for one thing, and Docetism didn't appear until the end of the apostolic era.Freke and Gandy laugh at this false assumption believed by so many dullard clods: "The traditional history of Christianity is that Literalism took the world by storm, whilst Christian Gnosticism remained a minor heretical fringe movement...Christian Gnosticism was an international movement " (p 41).If the ancient world was crowded cheek to jowl with Gnostics, how do they explain Celsus? The anti-Christian Celsus insisted that the orthodox Christians were vast in number, whereas the Gnostics were few, just as Ireneaus said. And as for the Gnostics themselves, they titled themselves 'The Few'. Explain that, please, Mr. Freke and Gandy. If Freke and Gandy refused to fact-check, what happened to their editors? Listen to this one: "Pagan philosopher Celsus, writing about Christianity c 170 AD only knows of gospels written by women" (p 34). Then funny thing about that book he wrote complaining about Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The various Gnostic sects did not proclaim Christ God of the universe, and did not believe he died to save us. Some Gnostic schools held beliefs that resemble pantheistic Hinduism, some hated flesh, the entire material world, and women. But no Gnostic could have recited the Rule of Faith, the creed, which was basic for any Christian.Chattering about Sophia and other goddesses, the piercing intellects of Freke/Gandy claim "the most important source for the Christian Goddess myth is Pagan mythology". A fact apparently gleaned from Dan Brown of 'Da Vinci Code' infamy (one noted historian said of Brown's 'Da Vinci Code" that he had accomplished the miraculous; he got every single fact wrong including the locations of the bathrooms at the Louvre). As for Jewish wisdom literature talking about a female...again, no. Although ancient Hebrew gave words either a feminine or masculine gender, much as the Spanish and French do today, this did not mean anybody thought a table was really female, or that wisdom pranced about in make up and jewelry."Christianity and other popular Mystery cults were adopted by the state...in an attempt to bring coherence to a fragmenting empire" (p 43). Apparently the scintillating brilliance that is Freke/Gandy have never grasped the fact that in the ancient world mystery cults were called mystery cults because you couldn't learn their mysteries without joining and paying a fee. Whereas Christians were grabbing innocent people on the street and babbling every single fact they knew about Christianity to them, the very opposite of a mystery cult.Freke/Gandy inform us that James was not the brother of Jesus. Then why did Josephus say he was, and why did James become the bishop of Jerusalem after the apostles left? The family of Jesus was real, or why do we have historical references to descendants for centuries? The Roman emperor Domitian, hearing some garbled version of Jesus, had all of Jesus' relatives dragged to Rome so he could examine them. Pretty hard to do with imaginary people."The Pagan...Aphrodite tells fundamentally the same tale as the later Christian myth of the lost Goddess" (p 91). Um, no. There has never been a Christian tale, myth, or nursery rhyme about a Goddess, lost or found. And when a group in late antiquity tried to worship Mary, the spoil sport Catholic Church declared them heretics. The always clever team of Freke and Gandy claim Paul talked about Sophia. No, it was the Gnostics who chattered on about aeons, Sophia, and other risible concepts. Paul was the one who called pagan gods 'demons'. See the difference?"Q portrays...Jesus and John the Baptist...sent by Sophia". Sophia again, and in Q, a claim I have never heard a biblical scholar, atheist or believer, express. Q, even as a concept, is now under extreme attack (for a book on this, pick up "Questioning Q"), but at any rate, since no fragment has ever been found, no one has the smallest idea of what was in it, let alone that it includes a mislaid Goddess. The discerning minds of Freke/Gandy insist Gnostics "preached liberty, equality, and fraternity". There were many different schools of Gnosticism, but most Gnostics seemed to be a self absorbed, preening elite, believing themselves to be filled to the brim with gnosis, and unhappily if temporarily forced to live among the dreadful vast population of squalid slaves and dirty soldiers."Creating visions of social utopias had always been part of" (p 33) Gnosticism. No it has not. Pick up a copy of "Missing Gospels" by Bock for a clearer picture of the Gnostics. They hysterically decry that "By the middle of the second century a Literalist school ....emerged in Rome, with autocrats such as Irenaeus. (p 38)" The facts: Irenaeus was the Bishop of Lugdunum in Gaul, not in Rome, and as for being a literalist, he frequently used allegory and typology."Christian Literalism became...a 'suicide cult'...Roman authorities...were...appalled at Christian Literalists' eagerness to be martyred" (p 39). An 'immense multitude' of Christians did not ask to be turned into living torches to light a dinner party for Nero. And huge numbers of Christians lapsed under persecutions. Perhaps Freke/Gandy need to consider buying a history book or two.Freke and Gandy claim Jesus was another dying-and-rising god. The idea of dying and rising gods was a Victorian through the 1920s era theory, now utterly discarded by biblical scholars. From Dr Jonathan Z Smith: "the category of dying and rising gods, once a major topic of scholarly investigation, must now be understood to be largely a misnomer based on imaginative reconstructions and exceedingly late or highly imaginative texts". A good book on the subject: "The Jesus Legend".Freke and Gandy ponder whether Jesus even existed, to the glad cries of everyone with a pornography problem. There are thousands and thousands of atheist biblical scholars, but, maddeningly for Freke and Gandy, these Christianity-hating scholars tenaciously insist Jesus existed, apparently grudgingly, since of course if they could get around the evidence, they would.Humorous true story: the agnostic anti-Christian Bart Ehrman wrote "Did Jesus Exist?: The Historical Argument for Jesus of Nazareth", in an attempt to get the Jesus-is-a-myth group to shut up and stop embarrassing him.Freke and Gandy hate, detest, and revile Christianity. "Religion is the Devil's greatest achievement," they seethe, and Christians do "evil in the name of holiness." Yes, St. Francis of Assisi and Mother Theresa of Calucutta fly to mind. They are so relieved because Christianity is a "dying religion".More pesky facts: Christianity, both Protestant and Catholic, is expanding with breathtaking rapidity in Africa and Asia. In 1900, there were three Europeans for every African in the world. But Europeans forgot to reproduce. By 2050, the UN recently calculated there will be three Africans for every European in the world. The famous Roman physician Galen was stunned that Christians remained in Rome during the plague (he, of course, fled) and tended the sick, killing many of them. The ancient Greeks tossed blind women into brothels; as soon as Christianity was legitimate, they formed hospitals to tend to the blind, not to mention charities for the poor in every parish . Even today, with all the UN and government charities, one out of every three charities is Christian.John Bradburne, who died this year, tended to lepers in Africa. He washed them, dressed their wounds, fed by hand those who were incapable. Again, even with government aid, the vast majority of lepers in the world today are cared for by Catholic nuns and priests. With their trademark keen insight Freke/Gandy point out that "Many people desperately want to believe in a miraculous savior" (p 57).And many people desperately, desperately want to deny there is a God who judges whether or not they will be in hell for all eternity.

An interesting read but nothing new. Blavatsky exposed the truth about the Universal (Catholic) Church in her first book "Isis Unveiled" written in 1877 as did Albert Pike in "Morals and Dogma" also from the late 19th century. James G. Frazier and others have shown that all religions including Christianity stem from ancient pagan beliefs. The sun dies on December 22, the winter solstice, and is born again or rises from the tomb three days later (when the days become perceptably longer) and ascends into heaven. I have read everything published on Gnosticism and find it interesting but still controversial. These men compare Gnosticism to Jung's depth psychology as does Stephan Hoeller. That's okay, I get it. What is not okay is the lengths these gentlemen go to to zealously prove their theory. It took me quite awhile to read this book because I took the time to fact check every footnote. They consistently misquote the Bible. They cherry pick the verses they think will help them and then rewrite them to push their agenda. I did enjoy reading the book and it will remain in my library for reference. Just remember that when you have an open mind, a lot of things get tossed in. It's up to the reader to separate the chaff.Additional comment: These gentlemen demonize Christians while glorifying Humanists. While the 10,000 people killed by the church during the Inquision is deplorable, take a look at the Humanist movement. Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, all darlings of the Humanists, tortured, butchered, slaughtered 100 MILLION people. The hypochrisy is atrocious.

This is an excellent book for a beginner on the Gnostic path and a natural progression for those who are currently on the Deepak Chopra/Wayne Dyer spiritual train, as I once was. However it emanates from what I call the "Knee Jerk" strand of Gnostic thought - the strand that adopts the ostrich position and patronisingly refers to evil as "the Good in disguise" - as if in the final analysis it's actually afraid to make the psychological leap into the unknown, succumb to the existential void and acknowledge the absurd reality of the world around it. I was on the new age spiritual path myself, and which yielded me many worldly benefits. I never believed in the dark side (to paraphrase George Lucas) and merely thought - as Freke and Gandy do - that evil is merely a byproduct of a misguided ego. I read this book during that period of my life. However a traumatic incident of cosmic proportions driven by the most organic - dare I say it - "evil" essence and pro-active malicious behaviour intent on my complete destruction on every level, occurred to me shortly afterward, a situation which lasted over 2 years, and which tore my perception of the world apart. I overcame it, but in doing so, had to drop all respect I had for the world, for society, for my own role in it and indeed my own ego. I had to work from spirit only, and my opponents were astonished. They expected me to operate from a traditional position of reverence for the world and the way it operates. The outcome of the situation has been my departure from the "One Universal Good God permeating everywhere" school of thought and onto a much edgier and combative view of what's actually going on behind the scenes. I've come to the conclusion that Life is a Product, designed copyrighted and created by Creation, Inc., with inherent flaws in the design, and has had a massive marketing and advertising campaign behind it from the First Day to convince human beings how great it is and how much they need it. What a shame that Freke and Gandy buy into this scam by the end of their otherwise great book.

The book was for my father. He grew up in Honohina and was thrilled to see pictures of all the places he remembers as a child. It's opened up a lot of new stories my dad is able to share with us.
