I am a big fan of the J.R.R. Tolkien books.. all of them. I discovered the first of this 2 volume history of the Hobbit in a local books store. I loved the earlier Christopher Tolkien series of books on how his dad wrote The Lord Of the Rings, so stumbling upon this two volume set was great. These books Vol 1 and Vol 2, detail how Tolkien created his beloved masterpiece, The Hobbit. How it started with a simple phrase written on one of his students essay books."In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit"It all started from that. The books go through the different version of The Hobbit before it was published in 1937 and changes that happened afterwords.. In one of the version of the story, Thorin Oakenshield is actually called Gandalf, whereas, Gandalf was named Baldorthrin. Smaug doesn't exist at first, but a dragon called "Pryftan" is present. The sentence "Thief, thief, thief ! We Hates it, we hates it for ever!" didn't appear in the original written version of the Riddle game, but was added a decade later. For those of you who are interested in how stories are written, changed and rewritten, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend these two volume books on how The Hobbit came to be created.

This book is incredible. The notations provide stellar insight into the books passages and give the reader a glance into the history and characters surrounding one of the most epic fantasy stories of all time!

I love all things Tolkien and when I found out this book was used for information on the making of the Hobbit Trilogy, I had to have it and read it.

I have been collecting Tolkien writings for some time and this one is special. It is my understanding that this is one of the original stories of the Hobbit. Truly a treasury and easy to read (print wise). The books was used but in good condition.

Anyone interested in the process of writing or Tolkien, or ideally, both, will relish the opportunity to delve into the history of how The Hobbit was written and developed.

There is a lot more to learn about Bag End than I thought. Very interesting look at a great story and characters. The history and story is very intriguing..

I highly recommend this book.

For some reason, Christopher Tolkien did not extend his History of Middle-Earth scholarship to the Hobbit. Rateliff provides an invaluable contribution by chronicling J.R.R. Tolkien's writing of his first and arguable best novel. In many respects, the early drafts of the Hobbit do not differ much from the published version. The first phase of the draft remains startlingly similar to the final book. The key plot elements - from the unexpected party to the trolls to Beorn - are all present. There are a few minor differences, particularly the names (I won't spoilt the surprise, but Gandalf and Thorin go by different aliases). The end of the second phase of the draft and third, and fourth phases (most of which are covered in this volume) deal with the latter half of the Hobbit story, and boy were there some changes. Bard wasn't the original dragon-slayer - not by long shot! It's fascinating to see how Tolkien originally envisioned the story and how much it differs from the final version. Finally, the book covers the fifth phase, Tolkien's attempt to rewrite the Hobbit in 1960 to make it better fit the style of Lord of the Rings. Ultimately, Tolkien only got to Rivendell and most of the changes only affect the tone, not the plot, of the story. Still, it's a fascinating "what if".I took off one star for something that bugged me throughout Rateliff's book. Rateliff supplements Tolkien's drafts with hundreds of detailed endnotes at the end of each chapter commenting on the text. These are generally very insightful, but because they're endnotes it's difficult and quite frustrating to have to flip back and forth to see how the comment relates to the text. This is especially so because the endnotes refer to very specific language or details in the text. The book ought to have used footnotes, or sidenotes such as those found in the Annotated Hobbit, so that readers can read the note right after reading the relevant text.Other than that quibble, this is a MUST for any Hobbit fan.
