About the Author
At the age of three, Al Argueta first traveled to Guatemala with his father and was utterly captivated by the country's landscape and its Mayan inhabitants. He would later live in Guatemala for two years, allowing him to formally learn Spanish and to experience Guatemala's culture firsthand. During summers in high school and college, Al often took a month off to travel to Guatemala, exploring its jungles, ruins, and villages.In college, Al majored in Journalism and Latin American Studies, managing to squeeze in two study-abroad programs—one in Manchester and one in Maastricht—and traveled through much of Europe. After college, he interned with Costa Rica's Tico Times, getting his first exposure to travel writing and photography, in addition to covering then-President Bill Clinton's visit to Guatemala. Al worked briefly for a newspaper in the Virgin Islands before moving on to photography school in Hawaii. He also taught English to college students in Thailand for a time, continuing to satiate the travel bug that bit him years back.Al now lives in Austin, Texas, where he's managed to stay put for an unprecedented six years. In addition to writing, he does freelance travel photography for clients that have included National Geographic Adventure, Caribbean Travel & Life, Condé Nast Traveler, Outside's GO, and Continental. This guidebook is excellent and expansive. I purchased this guidebook, as well as the Lonely Planet, for our week vacation in Guatemala. I ended up using the Moon guidebook 90 percent of the time, not only for travel recommendations while there, but also to add texture and background to the trip. Moon knocks it out of the ballpark again!
It seems to very informative and will be very useful for our upcoming trip.
This is a wonderful guide. It inspires me to go to Guetamala.

So far I'm very impressed with the content of this book. I'll have more to say after I return from a trip to Guatemala in December when I put the book to a full test.
The guide book was very out of date.
Had a month in Guatemala and I found this book not very informative. The information about the metro bus in Guatemala City was disorganized and inaccurate. This book kept recommending “go with a tour group...go with a tour group†I’m pretty sure no one buys a travel guide for that kind of advice. Long story short, after a couple days it was buried in the bottom of my bag. After the first week I donated it to the library at my hotel. Couldn’t justify packing it around anymore. Dead weight.
Moon handbooks have long been our favorite source of travel information. This one has provided us what we have needed for a trip to Guatemala.
