My very first real job offer was from Dick Lyon - we have been colleagues ever since. Dick is an empiricist - he is a skilled engineer, a renaissance man, and a hearing guru. You could not ask for a better guide through the intersection of modern auditory theory and modeling with engineering and machine learning.This book is the guide - it's a tour de force of history, technology, biology, modeling and explanation. If our hearing had been a microphone and amplifier, then speech recognition would have been easy. It's not - the hearing system is specialized for the human condition, and Dick lays out many of the modeling particulars. It's a concise (believe it or not) exposition of the last 50 years of hearing understanding and the associated growth of signal processing, where the signal processing is the tool for understanding. Only a true master could have pulled that off.Thanks, Dick, for a terrific exposition of the exquisite hearing system we all have! Get this book!!!
"Human and Machine Hearing" by Richard F. Lyon is a remarkable book. Written by a world-class expert in machine hearing, with a decades-long legacy of major contributions to the field, this book encapsulates a lifetime of understanding this fascinating and important subject. Covering the biology of hearing, the history of devices that have been invented to understand and measure hearing, theory and models of hearing at all levels of the auditory pathway, and modern introductions and summary of advances in Computational Auditory Scene Analysis and Machine Hearing, this book is both a welcoming introduction for a newcomer and a powerful summary and reference for intermediate and expert readers. For decades, Dick has been a leading proponent of filter-bank models of the cochlea and correlogram / Auditory Image Models of hearing, and it's great to see that these have had practical uses in modern commercial systems at technology companies such as Audience and Google. I am very glad to have my copy of this book and I recommend it very highly.
Dick Lyon has long worked on crafting models of our hearing apparatus for building machines than can hear, that is, machines that are able to extract meaning from sound. His deep insights gained from this journey are now available in this fascinating book. Starting from characteristics of sound and human hearing, Dick describes the functional aspects of the inner ear, the auditory nerve fibers, the auditory brainstem and higher cortical areas. With his extensive expertise in electrical engineering and mathematical descriptions he sets out corresponding computational models. He then shows how audio signals processed through a model of the auditory system can be efficiently analyzed by neural networks, for instance. The reading is of great clarity and benefits both a novice and an expert; I am using parts of it in my teaching at Imperial College London.
The book Human and Machine Hearing scratches an intellectual itch I've had for nearly twenty years. Colleagues and I in the machine vision field sometimes discussed the possible uses of machine hearing for industrial applications. Although there were textbooks on acoustics, human hearing, and signal analysis, and also papers related to our interest in machine hearing, there wasn't a comprehensive textbook that presented machine hearing in the same way that classic textbooks in machine vision did. The day I learned about Lyon's book I ordered it, and when the book arrived it proved to be all I'd wanted and more.Human and Machine Hearing is no doubt suitable for a semester- or year-long course; I would argue that it serves as a launching pad for multiple years of study. I had hoped to read the text once through in a few weeks, and then read through more carefully a second time over a period of months. But my pace has been considerably slower than I'd planned because I couldn't help but follow many of the references Lyon provides. So many wonderful rabbit holes to tumble down and explore! Lyon appears to have been particularly careful in selecting references, as I've had more fun following references in his book than I've had following references in other textbooks.Human and Machine Hearing is an engaging read not only because it presents technical material clearly, but also because the author's personality is evident throughout. Imagine your favorite professor's ability to speak extemporaneously about a subject of interest, weaving in bits of history and commentary, yet still presenting the material concisely and memorably, and you'll have some notion of the experience reading Lyon's book.My exuberance may be due in part to my newness to the field. Experts in acoustics and human hearing and machine hearing applications will have to provide more detailed reviews about the presentation of the material relatively to other textbooks. I'm daunted by how much I've yet to learn, but Lyon's book is the best guide I can imagine.
This mathematical and mechanical descriptors of human verbal and oral communications shines light on machine interrogatives, brain responses, and directive applications beyond biological efficiency and limits. Similarities with optical and other interactions with sensor array systems can also be recognized and extended in biological systems described herewith in machine hearing.
