Ok, first things first I love KA and have read everything she has written. I knew this book was going to be different from all her other books and actually in the erotica genre rather than her normal romance. I don't normally have issues reading bdsm if it is done well. And I guess to a point KA did well writing about all the different "play" the H/h had. I struggled with some of them later into the book because I just didn't find it sexy at all and turned me off so much I had to ignore the certain "tool".Here's some of the bigger issues I had...First, the beginning style of writing (which eventually smoothed out) was very hard to follow and understand. I had to force myself to keep reading and not give up. I felt it was too wordy and also too complex. I had to reread many things because it just didn't make sense to me. This obviously took me out of the flow. It seemed like it was trying to be more "high brow" and intellectual and I guess it was too much for my simple brain. It just didn't seem like KA's style of writing. And that was a big disappointment for me. I was willing to read out of my comfort zone because I LOVE her style of writing. I am not a fan of paranormal stories but because of her writing she made me love her vampire/werewolf series and her fantasyland series. So that's what I was expecting with this. But unfortunately it didn't sound like her.Ok, second issue (beware slight spoilers ahead) was in the first time the H/h come together to "play" she knows his computer profile says he's up for anything and no limits. But when they talk face to face her tells her he's not into a couple things. So what does she do? Forces him to do those couple things he just said he wasn't really comfortable with! I know NOTHING about the whole D/s thing besides what I've read in romance books but that being said I think a good Dom would take things slow and eventually push their sub out of his comfort zone done the road once more trust has been established. Not force it on him right off the bat. I get that she was looking for someone she could "break" without actually breaking, and that it was what he needed/wanted - to be forced out of his box. But I think that was a too big of a risk way to soon. But again I don't know that world so maybe that's normal, but it was still a con in my book.Third- the whole basis of this book was about him being an alpha-sub. I'm not sure this was the case. If it's a choice between A (alpha) or B (beta) in the true definitions of each word - then yes I guess he's an alpha. But I guess because you didn't get much other storyline outside the sex scenes I wasn't able to see him as a true KA alpha that she is known for. There was one or two times that he stepped up as alpha-male but he then eventually backed down and submitted to her. Just telling me he was an alpha over and over (and the character himself saying it) didn't make me believe it. Show me!! Develop the characters more, show me more of him outside the playrooms so I can get a better idea of who he really is.Which brings me to my final point, lack of a deep storyline and development. I was told about how both characters were starting to feel towards each other but the relationship was only developed through their sex scenes. And then a month later in the epilogue they are living together. What gets me through reading about this kind of stuff is still seeing outside the bedroom a love grow and develop. Didn't get that here. Why did I and so many other women around the world love the 50 shades books even though it was labeled porn? It was, for me anyway, the amazing love story and changes you saw in the characters as the story progressed. I saw what the playroom brought to the relationship but I also had the out of it times to pull me in. With the Deep End I didn't get the feelings and emotions. And maybe that's just me wanting more romance in the story rather than just a bunch of titillating scenes. So I'm really undecided if I will read more in this series. I know I pointed a few problems I had but I didn't hate the book. Maybe with this being her first one in this genre she has to work out some bugs? The blurb for the next in the series does already seem to have a different feel and voice, so who knows.

To say that I am disappointed is an understatement. Kristen Ashley is known for writing great characters and relationships to which you connect emotionally. Her books also usually have a great story and they are my go-to for re-reads. This book has none of that. I will admit that I wasn't enthusiastic about the "alpha sub" premise to start with, however having read Protecting His Own by Cherise Sinclair, I know that this can be done really well. This book has no plot. KA is known for writing compelling conversations and interactions between characters, but there was an almost complete lack of that in this book (at around 85% there started to be some glimpses of this). Really repetitious sx scenes abounded and I really disliked the whole "toy" and "babies" lingo, and the obsession with "harness". Personally, I also found the "tail" scenario and the "beast" and "chevalier" thing to be distasteful as well. I really hope that this author hasn't given up writing what she is really good at - great repartee and amazing connections that draw you to read her books over and over again just to jump on the bdsm bandwagon - especially when that is all that there is with virtually no story and characters that, until the very end of the book, you don't really care about. I had to force myself to keep reading and if this was any other author, I would have given up very early on.

Let me start by saying I have everything the author has ever written - sometimes the same book as both a paperback and Kindle version - and I do read BDSM when the story is good. So I was looking forward to KAs take on this subject. And it did not feel like a KA novel at all. It wasn't in her voice and I couldn't believe it when I started skimming just trying to get to the end. There was no build up to a romance. The characters did not feel real, and I really don't like writing this because I do love her books and re-read them constantly. But this one didn't do it for me. I will buy the next book because it's what I do but I don't think I'll be planning to take a "sick" day as I usually do so I can spend the whole day immersing myself in the world she weaves with her words.

I never thought the day would come when I gave a KA book a 1 star rating. I have read BDSM books before, but this one was over the top. There is no way in my mind that a true alpha would have a tail stuck in his hind end so he could play her steed. Amelie came off as very cold for much of the book. I did like Oliver a little better than her, but the idea of him being an alpha with all that he allowed her to do to him really turned me off. When he tells her his hard limits and she totally ignores them the first time they are together made her very unlikable and him no alpha.I so totally missed the chemistry between the characters that KA is so good at writing. This is the first KA book that I had to force myself to finish, hoping it would get better. Sadly, it did not. I will still be waiting for her next book to come out that is not from the Honey Series. KA is still my favorite author and I guess she has every right to try something new. This series is just not for me.

I bought this book because of the author. Sorry I did that. Stopped reading after chapter two, just couldn't get into the story. Will stay away from this series. Not normally my taste, just ten times further than Deacon...and I skipped those parts in that book.
