Excellent review of efforts to understand the sun and stars, from earliest calculations of solar size and distance.

This is an excellent review of the history of solar and stellar physics. It describes the process by which our understanding of the Sun and stars progressed from ignorance to its current state of knowledge. It covers all aspects of the topic and includes some fairly basic mathematical discussions which can be skipped without seriously impairing the reader's understanding of the material. Some relevant math is covered in a series of Appendices. I found this book to be a fascinating overview of solar and stellar physics from the historical vantagepoint, which would be a very useful complement to more standard ahistorical treatments. Brief biographical sketches of many of the important figures in solar and stellar physics are presented. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the history of astronomy and physics.

Lots to like about this novel, but there were some quirks which sort of ruined it for me and made it seem unrealistic. So, this is supposed to take place in Corpus Christi. Texas is very hot and humid. Boys in Texas play football, or soccer, if you were Mexican. All kids go to gym class, especially in high school. If you went swimming at a beach, you would have to wear a swim suit. My point is that there is no way a boy in Texas, especially South Texas, would be wearing a long sleeve shirt all the time. He would have take it off at least once a day for gym class at school. No one swims wearing a long sleeve shirt. No one would be bicycling around town in humid Texas wearing a long sleeve shirt, unless you were a Mormon missionary, perhaps. Some things in this story just did not add up. Maybe the author should have made it take place in Virginia, not Texas. Even the food was wrong. No one eats fish and chips in Corpus Christie. People eat fish tacos. I like what the novel was trying to accomplish, it just didn't ring true for the scenario. It just didn't seem real to me, since I lived in South Texas. It was as if the author just picked a place, but he had never actually been there himself.

I've read this book several times and it made me cry every single time I did.This is one of my favorites books, even though I'm not into sentimental books or movies. This is a great book if you're going to a sort of depression, even if it's not Diego's sort of/cause of depression.Vidas is basically taking a roll of a psychologist/therapist towards you through the book without you even noticing it.Some people said something about some parts of the story being dull because of the ocean and the shark... *sighs* Symbolism, guys, symbolism...*SPOILER*Him being in the middle of the ocean symbolizes him being alone in the depression, anger, sadness, etc. due to the fact that he had to keep quiet about the rape.The shark symbolizes the shark tooth... You know? When he escaped his feelings through self-harm (that could've killed him if he wasn't careful).Put the shark and the ocean together and you get his life and maybe even a foreshadowing of his near-death experience.*SPOILER OVER*This story is not for everyone, obviously. If you think self-harm is "stupid" or a way to "seek attention," you WILL NOT be able to connect with the main character.This is the only book I've read from this author and I've been thinking about more of his stuff, but it doesn't seem like my thing. Plus, I don't have the time anymore...If you like sentimental books, I highly recommend this one. This one is in my top 5 favorites. :)

If you are looking to become a Juvenile Probation Officer or even a counselor... I HIGHLY recommend this book. After reading this book I guarantee you will become much more aware in general. About your life and others including clients. Here and there you want to think, “ GET TO THE POINT...” but realistically no one openly says what they are think or what is going on in their life... therefore this book keeps you guessing, and allows you to place yourself in the child’s shoes.

Bait was one of the easiest, quickest reads I have had in awhile. I sat down for a moment, and before I knew it, it was over. For a story revolving around sexual abuse, it went down rather smoothly. And while I wasn't in tears or emotional distress, the story was believable, the characters endearing and real. In some ways, it felt strange to take such a tale so lightly, but it is the most appropriate way to address such issues with kids. As a teacher who works with severally abused and neglected children, I was thrilled to have found a novel that I could use at times for students dealing with similar issues.As always, Alex Sanchez's writing is always a joy to read.

I've read all of Alex Sanchez's other books and this one was excellent, as I have come to expect from him. I'm glad that the main character is not gay as I think that would box Mr. Sanchez in too much. Christopher Rice started out writing about gay main characters but on his third book the protagonist was straight with gay supporting characters. I think this is very important if the books are going to reach a larger audience. This is the second time Mr. Sanchez has chosen to write about a straight person and given him a gay character in a supporting role. I think he does this very successfully.

This book was absolutely amazing. The story of Diego and all that he had to overcome was so powerful, and it even helped me through a few of my own problems.It starts out with Diego punching a gay guy for looking at him funny... but don't get turned off by this! It plays a very important part in the plot. Why exactly is Diego so afraid of homosexuality? Well it had to do with his stepdad, Mac, who molested him.This has become my favorite book, and I would highly recommend it to anybody, but especially to those who have suffered through sexual abuse.

What an amazing piece of art.Bait takes you on the journey of healing for a very troubled young teenager. Diego struggles with his past and what happened to him. The author unfolds this process of healing with such passion and courage, that one feels Diego pain right in ones heart. You are right with him on the journey, like a silent companion.The characters are perfectly written and developed - and with such a depth, that they feel just real. Especially Diego with his deep hidden pain.If you like to read about the healing process of troubled teenager, who has been repeatedly abused, you will like this book - and yes, there is a happy ending :-).

Great easy read. The connection the author made with the main character and the reader was emotional and left great expectations to learn from.

Pierre Nugues is a professor in the Dept. of Computer Science of Lund University. His research is focused on natural language processing for advanced user interfaces and spoken dialogue. This includes the design and the implementation of conversational agents within a multimodal framework and text visualization. He led the team that designed a navigation agent - Ulysse - that enables a user to navigate in a virtual reality environment using language, and the team that designed the CarSim system that generates animated 3D scenes from written texts. In this case, the Hays translation is the hardcover, while the authors who translated the paperback and Kindle versions aren't specified. So use the tools available (look inside, free sample) to get an idea of the language used by the author and see if it's something you'd like to read, or if a different translation suits you better.

I am sincerely pissed that I was not provided a copy of this as a kid growing up. I have devised a work around to the whole "Not growing up with a father figure" issue. I have decided that Marcus Aurealis is my actual father, and Socrates is my great uncle and Thales is my grand father. I realize this sounds nutty to read but I honestly feel more in common with these thinkers then the absent XY chromosome donor.

I don't know who did the translation for this one but I found it very difficult to follow. This prompted me to look around and I found another translation by George Long (Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 1862). Even though it's not a recent translation, Long's version is often easier to understand. Compare the translations of the first paragraph for example:This version:Of my grandfather Verus I have learned to be gentle and meek, and to refrain from all anger and passion. From the fame and memory of him that begot me I have learned both shamefastness and manlike behaviour. Of my mother I have learned to be religious, and bountiful; and to forbear, not only to do, but to intend any evil; to content myself with a spare diet, and to fly all such excess as is incidental to great wealth. Of my great-grandfather, both to frequent public schools and auditories, and to get me good and able teachers at home; and that I ought not to think much, if upon such occasions, I were at excessive charges.George Long's version:From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper. From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character. From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich. From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally.Having said this however, it's still worth comparing both translations which are free on the Kindle.

First, do we all recognize that the author of this text, Marcus Aurelius, was a Roman Emperor? If so, why have I not been forced to read this from a young age? This is quite possibly the most insightful, existential book I've ever read. Emperor Aurelius has given us wisdom in its purest form. This should be a manual for every human's life. Every sentence is mind-numbingly profound. This book is so good, that I might just have the entire text tattooed on my body. I cannot stress enough that the sagacity of this book is beyond what I have ever read. Definitely a must-read and a must-live-by.

I used this book for college physics. What I like more about this particular edition is that every chapter opens with a particular topic of interest and throughout the chapter you learn the tools to solve it. For example, on the chapter dealing with vectors, the opening problem was how an ant, after zig zagging all over can return home in a straight line. You then learn how to work with vectors and somewhere in the chapter you'll learn the answer of how ants do it. This edition also goes beyond your typical college physics topics and dives into astrophysics and quantum physics.

I liked the fact that it covers almost every area of physics I could want to work on, except for quantum mechanics. The coverage of special relativity was light. There was one chapter (out of dozens) where the exercises seemed to be screwed up. The answers in the back of the book sometimes gave just a numerical value, and that was sometimes only given to one or two decimal places.

While there is probably no one text in any scientific discipline that covers all the bases for that branch of science, "Fundamentals of Physics Extended" comes close for the study of physics. Of course is does not go into the depth that a book on fluid dynamics or quantum mechanics would do for their respective disciplines, it does cover pretty much all subject areas well enough to make those more focused texts approachable while maintaining enough depth to be useful as both an undergraduate text and a reference text for professionals.There are two facets of the book that really stand out in my opinion. First, if you simply open the book to a random page, you will encounter either a blend of textual material, pictures and diagrams, or problems, lots of problems. The instructive portion of the text looks more like a flashy High School physics text book rather than a dry but profound undergraduate text (sort of like comparing Giancoli with an older Sears, Zemansky, and Young text.) Don't let that distract you, the didactic text explanations are well thought out and focused. Additionally, text does assume that you can follow the math behind the physics and ties the theoretical concepts presented in the text with the necessary calculus based mathematics in lots of worked out examples. The concepts are then reinforced with problem for the student to work out, lots of problem that range from the simple to the more complex.If there is one weakness, it would be the lack of mathematical rigor. As mentioned, it is assumed that can follow and understand the math. As a result, there are few areas were one can find a clear mathematical derivation from basic first principle relation to the more abstract expressions. Consider for example the presentation of the Doppler Effect; we go from a verbal explanation of what is happening physically directly to the equation that you need to know to calculate the Doppler shift for any case (moving or stationary, source or observer). For some subjects, this is fine, but is may require a secondary text if a more robust derivation is required. I suppose that it is assumed that by the time you reach those concepts you should 'see' the derivations as a matter of common sense.(ok, this is the role of the professor ;-)Considering that the book itself is over 1200 pages in an 8.5 x 11 form factor (w/micro font)plus a number appendices, and has a fairly in depth treatment of modern physics too boot, the lack of mathematical rigor can be overlooked for the undergrad who needs to know how to solve physics problems and is not overly concerned with the finer details of why (which is the purview of the more specialized texts). Is this the standard physics text? Well perhaps not, but it comes close and is well worth the investment as either a reference text or a pedagogical text or both. This text has earned a permanent spot on my shelves.

The required text in my college physics class was extremely unclear, so I asked my professor what his favorite text was. He told me that in over 30 years of teaching physics at college he likes this one and the first edition of this text the best. He calls it the bible of physics, and still turns to it to prepare for lectures. I picked it up here on amazon for $1, and absolutely love it. It is clear, concise, and derives everything. I, and my awesome professor, highly recommend this text as a suppliment to whatever unclear muddled up text your course requires.

If you are seeking a calculus based physics text, this may be the book for you. The author has a very entertaining way of presenting the material and creating examples. The problems covered in each section are increasingly difficult. So far, I have not been able to work all of the odd numbered problems (answers included) in any of the later chapters of the text, but I still feel that I am mastering the basics of the material. The problems prevent the learner from falling into the typical physics trap of plugging numbers into a formula without any understanding of the material. I am sure that I will be referring to this text frequently in the future.

Excellent book for content. Some of the best explanations. Better than most professors could teach or explain the topics. Price is the reason for 4/5 stars as well as that despite the steep price, the used rental kind of fell apart more or less by the time i received it

This is the textbook for my "physics with calculus" course. It is well written, well illustrated and has lots of depth. It also has lots of very good problems at the end of each chapter. Be aware that there are several versions of this book, all with almost identical covers. Be sure you're buying the right one.

Not a great textbook, but it does that job. I'd much more highly recommend Serway's college physics. This has some dumb examples and the problem solving algorithms are overly complicated.
