This book would be useful for students of any age and would be a good book just to have around the house, too. It's fun to read and is the sort of book anyone would enjoy picking up and reading for a few minutes or a few hours. (My son was very pleased to receive it.) Highly recommended!

This is a good quick reference book. I Was imagining it would be more of a dictionary/thesaurus and it's really a short compilation of common grammar errors and explanations of what things are. For example Eurydice is the wife of Orpheus in Greek mythology. A good handbook if you don't have google handy...

Here Comes the Insurance Guy." Several years ago, my sister was reading Mortenson's Three Cups of Tea, and said I must read it. Well, I finally got around to it, and she couldn't have been more right on her recommendation! Mortenson's story inspires and challenges me, yet frustrates me at the same time. He has become well-known for his work building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan, even earning a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. Three Cups of Tea tells the story of his start and the obstacles he had to overcome.Mortenson was a self-proclaimed climbing bum. He worked as a nurse, but mostly worked to climb. A friend asked him to come along as the medic on an expedition to K2, the worlds second tallest peak. Due to a rescue of another climber, he did not get to summit, and then got lost on the way down the mountain. He ended up in the village of Korphe, where he recovered, enjoyed the hospitality of the northern Pakistani villagers, and changed the course of his life. As he got to know the people of Korphe, he observed the children sitting in a make-shift, open-air classroom, working on their lessons with no books, no paper, and no teacher. He promised to return to the village to build a school for the kids.For the next year, Mortenson lived in his car, worked extra hours at his nursing job, and saved everything he could for the school in Korphe. He typed letters (Yes, typed! He didn't know anything about computers at this point.) to every wealthy person he could think of. He ended up returning to Korphe a year later in a truck loaded with materials to build the school. They built a bridge, instead, which is a cool story in itself, but by doing so he gained credibility and momentum to come back and build the school and many more in the area. To date, Mortenson has built dozens of schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan, educating thousands of children, focusing especially on girls, who previously couldn't go to school at all.Much of Three Cups of Tea reads like an adventure story, and what adventures he had! Besides the sheer audacity of his mission, Mortenson was kidnapped and held captive by Taliban, caught in the crossfire between rival warlords, and was the subject of at least one fatwah. But his reputation grew with every school. The Taliban captured him, but only wanted him to build schools for their people! Warlords rode for days to meet him and invite him to their villages. He was loved and respected virtually everywhere he went (except by the CIA, who wanted him to reveal Osama bin Laden's hiding place. He didn't know. . . .)I said Three Cups of Tea inspired and frustrated me. You can't help but be inspired by someone who does so much with so little. Mortenson is not independently wealthy, was not well-connected, and did not have rich parents to get money from. He had nothing when he committed to build a school for Korphe. His single-minded, relentless commitment to education for these poor, rural people is impressive, especially when you realize he started not only with no money, but with no organizational or political support. My frustration lies in the realization of how little I've done with my life, and how little passion and commitment I've brought to my endeavors. Oftentimes when we read about people who do great things, their greatness springs from privilege or circumstance, and we can think, "Oh, of course he was great, or did great things! Look what he had to start with." But Mortenson (no slight to him is meant here) was an average guy with no resources, yet has accomplished much. What a challenge to the rest of us regular folks!One thing I would like to have seen explored in Three Cups of Tea is Mortenson's faith. The child of missionaries, he was raised as a devout Christian. Although he never states that he has rejected Christianity, he gives no indication that, as an adult, he is a follower of Jesus. He does talk about taking on some religious affectations of the Muslims, such as joining them in daily prayer, but he seems to distance himself from the Muslim faith. In a way, this works in his favor: there is no ulterior motive for his work. He does not found schools as a means to gain a foothold in the culture from which he can proselytize. His mission is to promote education solely for the sake of education. I would just be interested to hear more about how his personal faith has shaped that mission through the years.As a non-sectarian worker with the mission of educating children, he has been a force for peace in the region. He started his work before 9/11, and, in the face of virulent anti-Americanism, has continued to be the face of America for Muslims in areas where he works. How can they be anti-American? They know and love "Dr. Greg," a fine American! His presence there has done more for peace than treaties or troops or aid could ever do.

This guy has injected a ton of fiction into his story....Professor of English and top memoirist Mary Karr writes about him in "The Art of Memoir" in her chapter about scam artists. After discussing how James Frey set out to fool people, she writes, "So did Greg Mortenson, the skunk-posing-as-saint builder of Afghan schools in 'Three Cups of Tea.' He didn't hallucinate that he'd been kidnapped by Taliban when, in fact, he'd been hosted in some kind people's homes. He cooked up events to mold his public image into that of the noble, forgiving survivor of brutal treatment. Jon Krakauer's 'Three Cups of Deceit' details how Mortenson went on to drain massive sums from his charity for personal use, renting private jets for book-selling junkets and buying his own books at retail to stay on best-seller lists. He was forced by the Montana attorney general to repay $1,000,000 to settle these allegations."

Entertainer one. But for many facts apparently is not accurate story and apparently lied a lot. In this way just distracts the public with nicely written story while getting more money from it publication. All the work may or may not be true. At least they should say is fiction.

I first tried the "adult" version but found it difficult to wade though. This version is a little better. It is really a memroire but is written in the third person. It seemed to me that it was a man patting himself on the back for all the schools he was building. While I applaud what he did, I did not enjoy this book. The best part of the whole thing was the interview with his ten-year-old daughter at the end. I only finished it because it was our bookclub book for the month.

This is an incredibly important, uplifting story of an "average" American who made great sacrifices and risked his life to help others in a land far, far away. Greg Mortensen is a true hero and has done more to help eradicate the root causes of terrorism (the lack of education and/or the brainwashing of impressionable children in the guise of education) than just about everyone else. He is a great example of how much difference one person can make in the lives of thousands of others. This should be required reading for students, politicians, and others around the world.Having said all of that, I did not like the way that Greg's story was told. The author, David Oliver Relin, is a journalist and I expected him to be more objective. It is clear that Greg Mortensen is a hero, but the author feels the need to bludgeon the reader over the head with that statement when is not at all necessary. Anyone reading the facts will come to that conclusion.I appreciated the photos which were provided. They put a face to several of the key Pakistani and American people portayed in the book, so they were more real. The map was also helpful except that several of the towns which were discussed in the last quarter of the book weren't pictured (so it was harder to place them in geographical context).I recommend this book to everyone, and I plan to donate to the charity which Greg established.

This was a great read. The stories, practically without exception, were superlative SF: imaginative, clever and very well written. I even feel somewhat ... saddened ... to realize that many of the stories, and one in particular (from the mid-to-late 40's), were much, much better written than a lot of the work available today: I enjoyed everything immensely, but was amazed to discover this writer of nearly 70 years ago seemed to have a much better understanding of (and abilty to utilize) basic grammar, mathematics, and rudimentary scientific principles than do many of the "modern" authors I have read. Indeed, the capacity of readers to understand what many of these wonderful authors from long ago took for granted, could easily be described as "advanced" topics and concepts for many contemporary readers. I highly recommend this to fans of SF short stories. A few of the stories you may already know, but to me, they were even better on re-reading. Altogether, it's a wonderful anthology of many standout works and I am very glad I bought it.

The SF Hall of Fame series was established to recognize quality SF writing before the era of the HUGO and NEBULA awards. What a wonderful gift to the early SF pioneers who were shamefully treated by the mainstream of creative writers. Of course, SF writers themselves changed these negative impressions by the higher literary standards achieved in the 1950s and beyond by such writers as Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Roger Zelazny, Ursala Le Quin, Joanna Russ, Frank Herbert (I'm having fun proving my point with this list, which could go on and on . . . .). This first volume is framed by two stories of a journey to Mars: "A Martian Odyssey" from 1934 (I wanted to make a movie version with Jack Nicholson as the hero) and "A Rose for Ecclesiastes" from 1963 (I wanted to make a movie version with Jack Nicholson as the hero). In those intervening 29 years SF writing matured from Stanley Weinbaum's rather primitive pulp fiction to Roger Zelazny's stunning modernist prose. The first story is just an action fantasy, with little science and the most rudimentary fiction techniques. Still it's a great read! It has action, humor, suspense and one of the great alien characters in the whole genre, the bird-like and noble-hearted Martian, named Tweel. Trust me: once you meet Tweel you will never forget it (?). The later distinction between Hard SF and Soft SF did not yet exist and I doubt it would have mattered to Weinbaum, who was not a professional writer. However, three decades later, we have a very professional, and polished writer in Roger Zelazny, who had internalized the main currents of modern literature as his references to Hart Crane, Rainer Maria Rilke, the Mahabharata, Shakespeare, Rimbaud attest. You get the point. For Zelazny, goddamit, SF is literature and occupies its own niche in world literature. His main character is a poet, an anti-hero with illusions of heroism, a scoundrel and a brilliant, imaginative individual who single-handedly saves a dying civilization from imploding. And what does he get for his efforts. Nothing, no material rewards, no recognition. In this, he resembles the existentialist anti-hero of main stream fiction in the 1960s. And Zelazny's style is breathtaking: metaphorical, lyrical, sarcastic (even sardonic), allusive, persuasive and, beneath Gallinger's tough talk, deeply moving, even empathetic. And Zelazny knew he was writing Soft SF, so he could indulge his imagination in creating his version of a SF Mars and an alien race inhabiting it. The distinction between Hard and Soft forms of SF clarified the intentions of writers so that their readers did not misinterpret the results. This volume is contains a plethora of short masterpieces which together create a vivid primer in the varieties of SF.

This is a collection of very good early science fiction. The selection is varied enough within the genre that you will find something to love here. No complaints about the quality of the writing. The readers all range from good to excellent as well. Where this collection fails is in the packaging and presentation.The disks all come in a thick plastic box that does not stay reliably latched. The disks sit loosely on a spindle inside this case, I guess there's about twenty of them. Nowhere in the package is there a table of contents showing which work is on what disk, and which chapters. They just run, one after another. About half the disks skip badly on the last chapter, they may or may not for you. As this is CD encoding rather than mp3, each story spans two or three disks. You fiddle around, sorting through a stack of loose cds, to swap out and continue the story. This is just not the way to package a collection of this kind.While I love most of these stories, the substandard packing will prevent me from buying the other two volumes.
